BellSouth has informed JSU that all payphones on campus will be removed by January 30, 2003. The payphone industry has been in decline for many years, and this icon of public communications is starting to disappear across the country.

Jacksonville State University will hold a split, two-ceremony graduation (one event in the morning, another in the afternoon) on Saturday, December 14 at Pete Mathews Coliseum, with candidates for graduation divided by colleges. During the 10 a.m. commencement, graduating seniors in the College of Education and Professional Studies and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, along with graduate students from both colleges, will receive degrees. Candidates in the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Commerce and Business Administration will receive their degrees during the 2 p.m. ceremony. Candidates for graduation are included in this listing.

Former Congressman Browder conducted sixteen forums as an extended version of the JSU Eminent Scholar Public Lecture Series this Fall, beginning at Alabama schools in September and concluding in November at institutions in the national capital; he even delivered one lecture in Moscow.

Approximately 600 Jacksonville State University student cast their votes on Thursday to select the five women who would be the 2002 Homecoming Court. Students were able to vote for up to five to narrow down the Homecoming Pageant's Top Ten to who would be on the court.

Beginning in November, any vehicle on campus that has five or more unpaid parking tickets that are at least 30 days old will get the boot--an immobilizing device University Police will use on vehicles to motivate offenders to abide by the rules.

NABI formed a partnership with JSU and provided the graphics workstations valued at $50,000 needed to run the software.

Tom Williams recalls that on October 10th, he was on his way to Louisiana to tape nine episodes of "Big Boyz Toyz" for Jacksonville's WJXS-TV24 when he got the news that the station license had been approved for Alabama Heritage Communications L.L.C. by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Williams and the station's other partners were so busy they didn't have time to celebrate until today.

Dr. Gordon Crews, head of JSU's Department of Criminal Justice who will be conducting the seminar, has had a researcher's interest in the connection between Satanism and crime, particularly the link to juvenile crime, since working in law enforcement as a bloodhound officer. Since then he has published numerous articles and books, as well as conducted seminars on the subject. The seminar starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday, October 26th in Merrill Building.

Jacksonville State University rededicated Cole Library Monday following completion of the exterior renovation project, which replaced the old crumbling white marble with red granite.

10-21-02: Pete Mathews Steps Down
JSU Board of Trustee Chairman Pete Mathews announced Monday he will step down as chairman at the end of the year. Mathews has served on the board for 37 years and is one of only two remaining trustees from the founding board created by the legislature when Jacksonville State College was elevated to university status in 1966. Trustee Jim Bennett will become chairman in January.

10-21-02: JSU Inks $15 Million Bond Issue
President Bill Meehan and Board of Trustee Chairman Pete Mathews sign an agreement to issue a $15 million bond issue for capital improvements. The funds will be used for the renovation of Ayers Hall and the Field House, and will pay for the construction of a multi-purpose building and the renovation of a consortium building at McClellan to be shared with Gadsden State Community College.

10-18-02: JSU ROTC 10-Miler Team To Run Race in DC on Oct. 20
JSU's ROTC 10-miler team left Jacksonville on Thursday, headed northeast to Washington D.C. Captain John Nolan, who is the freshman and sophomore ROTC instructor, as well as the advisor for the 10-miler team, was unaware of any changes being made to the 10 mile race to be held October 20th. It simmers. It smokes. Hardwood creaks and groans against the heat. The fire wins the battle of resistance and consumes the wood. Fueled flames climb higher and higher into the night sky, white-hot tips licking at the stars. The light of the fire beats out the moon, beats out even the brightest star. Jacksonville State University students, along with university students nationwide, partake in the ancient rite of a bonfire as the blaze of the alma mater, the nurturing mother, signals her children to return home. And that they will, on Saturday, November 9.

Alex D. Baker, a 1976 graduate of Jacksonville State University and a graduate of the Institute of Organizational Management at Terry School of Business at Georgia Tech, will deliver the spring commencement address at JSU. Commencement is in Paul Snow Stadium on Friday, April 26, 2002, at 6:30 p.m.

04-18-02: Jacksonville Arts Council’s Living Museum & Fair Set for April 27
A gathering of weavers, potters, carvers, quilters, artists and other time-honored crafts folk, the Living Museum is a juried show that not only displays the work but showcases the artists in motion as they create their crafts. In addition, the day will feature a full slate of music, storytelling and special buys as square merchants join the event with sidewalk sales.

Jacksonville State University's Small Business Development Center and the Anniston Army Depot are partnering to present a seminar, titled Business Opportunities Conference and Trade Fair 2002, on Thursday, April 25, from 8:30 a.m. - noon at Stephenson Hall on campus. The seminar will help small businesses that want to sell products and services to the government.

The Jacksonville State University board of trustees gave President Bill Meehan authorization to begin the preliminary steps toward establishing a $15 million bond issue to fund the renovation of Ayers Hall along with a newly acquired building at Ft. McClellan and other capital improvements. In other business, the trustees increased tuition beginning with the fall semester.

04-11-02: Tuition Increase Likely for Fall Term
JSU students can expect tuition to go up for the fall semester, according to Don Thacker, JSU's vice president for administrative and business affairs. Thacker said the university's budget committee has made three recommendations to JSU President Bill Meehan for a tuition increase. Meehan will make a final recommendation to the board of trustees at that group's meeting on Monday.

Heart disease is today’s number one cause of death in women over 50, according to Jacksonville State University’s Debra Goodwin, instructor of family and consumer sciences. “Being proactive about heart disease may help women decrease their risk of developing the disease,” said Ms. Goodwin, who is pursuing her doctorate at the University of Alabama.

Many young people incorrectly think that libraries are becoming outdated. “Not a chance,” according to Jacksonville State University’s Dr. George Whitesel, professor and assistant librarian. “Economic forces alone, such as copyright restrictions and the high cost of going electronic will keep traditional libraries in business,” says Dr. Whitesel. “More important, gaps exist in electronic offerings that only a visit to the library can fill. People seriously looking for reliable, quality information will have to keep a foot in both worlds.”

04-04-02: Worden Weaver (formerly of JSU), A WWII Vet, Makes One More Run
His frail legs dangling over a yellow oxygen tank, 82-year-old Worden Weaver of Mobile fastened his seat belt aboard a World War II bomber at a Decatur airport. Weaver was preparing for one more bomber ride in a B-24 Liberator and a trip back in time to Aug. 1, 1943, when he was a B-24 pilot shot down over Romania.
