Three Share the Faculty Scholar Lecturer Award |
 Whitton, Cadwallader, Claeren. Abby Knight JSU News Bureau A dramatic collaborative effort by three Jacksonville State University professors earned them this year's Faculty Scholar Lecturer Award presented at the Faculty Recognition Reception held at the President's Home on May 14th. Professor of Drama Wayne Claeren, Associate Professor of Art Diana Cadwallader, and English Professor Steve Whitton were recognized for their dramatic production, The Late Mr. Shakespeare. Drs. Claeren and Whitton wrote the play; Claeren starred in it; Whitton directed; and Cadwallader designed the set. Based on the novel of the same name written by British novelist Robert Nye, the one-man show was adapted to the stage by Claeren and Whitton. It premiered at JSU's Ernest Stone Performing Arts Theater on September 27, 2001 and ran for four performances. The lead role of Pickleherring was played by Claeren, who has a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and teaches classes in theater history, theory, playwriting and directing at JSU. In the play, Pickleherring is an old actor in London sometime in 1666. He is recalling his youth when he was a member of Shakespeare's theatrical troupe playing the female roles in the Bard's plays. Whitton, who teaches courses in American literature as well as dramatic literature, theory and film for the JSU English Department and holds a Ph.D from the University of South Carolina, directed the production. At last year's Faculty Award Reception, he was recognized with the Cleo and Carla Thomas award for Outstanding Community Education and Service. Diana Cadwallader is an associate professor of art and holds a Master's of Fine Arts from Yale University. She designed the production's set, which depicts Pickleherring's home during the London Fire of 1966. Although furnished with minimal props, each one served a purpose; for example, a scarf that assisted Pickleherring in his transition in and out of different characters. |
