JACKSONVILLE -- September 6, 2002 --
Jacksonville State University enrolled more students this fall than ever
before: nearly 9,000 students. The official enrollment that will be
reported to the Alabama Commission on Higher Education is 8,930. Adjusting
for 38 police academy students, the figure is 8,968, which represents a
growth of 490 students over last year or an increase of six percent.
A significant number of the new students are "distance learners" --
students who take courses over the internet and by compressed video and
other methods. As JSU grows toward its goal of 10,000 students, the
administration is anticipating even greater numbers of distance learners.
