JSU students named to the President's List and the Dean's List for the Fall Semester 2003 are cited in these listings.   Students earning a perfect 4.0 grade point average (all A's) are named to the President's List; those attaining all A's and B's, to the Dean's List.

12-16-03: Flags Formerly Flown over National/State Capitals Now Flying on JSU Campus
JSU President Bill Meehan receives the American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol and the Alabama flag flown over the state capitol from state senator Dale Marsh. The two flags were accepted by Pres. Meehan on behalf of the University Police Dept., which is now flying them on poles in front of Bibb Graves Hall, the administration building.

JSU's top graduates among candidates receiving degrees from the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Commerce and Business Administration were awarded their degrees during JSU's morning graduation ceremony (first of two commencements of the day). These distinguished graduates--Allison Brooke Floyd of Piedmont, AL; Misty Dawn Phillips, of Bynum, AL; and Kelly Ray Rampy, of Piedmont, AL are shown here with JSU President Bill Meehan. 12-16-03: New Community Holiday TV Special Airs This Season
“A Closer Christmas,”  a joint production of Jacksonville State University’s Television Services Department and WJXS TV24, will air for the first time on Wednesday December 17th at 6:30 p.m.  The one hour Christmas Special was taped at the home of Phil and Denise Webb in the Golden Springs area of Calhoun County.  It features choirs, trios, soloists, praise teams and musicians from several area churches and the community.

12-16-03: WJXS TV24 To Replay JSU/Community Production of "Handel’s Messiah"
Handel’s Messiah presented by Jacksonville State University’s Music Department will be televised by WJXS TV24 on Thursday night December 18th at 7 p.m. and on Christmas Day at 8:00 a.m.  The program was produced by JSU’s Television Services Department and features the JSU A Cappella Choir, the Calhoun County Civic Chorale, and Festival Orchestra.

12-16-03: “Family Holiday Concert” To Air on WJXS TV24 during the Holidays
Jacksonville State University’s Television Services production of a “Family Holiday Concert” will be aired several times during the holidays on WJXS TV24.  The concert was taped at Leone Cole Auditorium and is a music gift to the community by JSU”s Department of Music.

The replay times for JSU's Fall 2003 Graduation Ceremonies on WJXS TV24 will be Tuesday 12/16 at 12 noon and Wednesday 12/17 at 8:30 am. The morning and afternoon ceremonies will be shown back to back at the above times.

12-12-03: Proposed Plans To Build 1400-acre Military Memorial Park
Representatives of the U.S. Armed Forces Tribute Foundation were on campus Friday to promote plans to build a 1400-acre military memorial park with "Walls of Valor" that will exhibit lists of living and deceased servicemen from all branches of the military. The park is being planned in Oglethorpe County, GA.

12-12-03: Tim Huddleston Announces the von Braun Scholars Program
Located on the campus of Jacksonville State University is a program aimed at boosting K through 12 students' interest in science: the von Braun Scholars program. Funded by NASA and named for the legendary rocket engineer Dr. Wernher von Braun, the von Braun Scholars program was established to advance math and science learning in K-12 schools.

Dr. Joe Delap, Jacksonville State University’s associate vice president for academic affairs, recently returned from a trip to Wuhan University in Central China where he participated in its 110th anniversary celebration.

12-11-03: JSU To Participate in White House Environmental Roundtable
A “roundtable discussion” organized by the White House will include JSU’s Environmental Policy and Information Center (EPIC) as a co-host on December 11th and 12th in Memphis, Tennessee. JSU joins the Southern Environmental Law Center and Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Science in co-hosting the upcoming roundtable.

Jacksonville State University’s 2003 Fall commencement will be held in Pete Mathews Coliseum, Saturday, December 13th at 10:00 a.m. for candidates receiving degrees from the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Commerce and Business Administration, and at 2:00 p.m. for candidates receiving degrees from the College of Education and Professional Studies and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Graduation candidates are cited in this list.

12-04-03: 2002-2003 Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame Inductees
On Saturday, December 6, 2003, the Athletic Department will induct 36 student-athletes into the 2002-2003 class of the Scholar Athlete Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place at halftime of the men's basketball game, JSU vs. Tennessee Temple.

JSU Assistant Professor of Education Dr. Judy McCrary, the KDE Club and other JSU faculty members have raised over $1300 for a Romanian orphanage by selling Romanian children's artwork. The winter-themed artwork was copied onto greeting cards and sold for $10 per pack. The artwork will be showcased on WJXL TV 24 on December 4.

11-12-03: Real-time Air Monitoring Demonstration at JSU This Week
The JSU Environmental Policy and Information Center is presenting a program on air monitoring technology. Open path air monitors are currently being used by the military to monitor air on a real-time basis at sites where there is known presence of chemical agent. The demonstration is presented on behalf of JSU, US Senator Richard Shelby, the Calhoun County Commission, and members of the Alabama Environmental Management Commission. It will take place on Thursday, the 13th of November at 10:00 a.m. in Lecture Room 234 in JSU’s Martin Hall. It is expected to last approximately an hour and the public is invited to attend.

The annual Jacksonville State University Potter's Guild Sale of Christmas items will be held Friday, November 14 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Theron Montgomery Building near the campus bookstore, and on Saturday, November 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pool House at the corner of Cole Drive across from Stephenson Gym.

The Jacksonville State University Marching Southerners are proud to announce an exciting ending to their 2003 season.  The Southerners will be performing a special half-time presentation with the Atlanta Bagpipe Band on November 15, 2003 at the JSU vs. Eastern Illinois football game.  The game will be held at Paul Snow Stadium on the campus of JSU and will begin at 4:00 PM.  Immediately after the game, the Marching Southerners will be performing their entire exhibition show.

11-06-03: JSU Speaks Out on State Proposals
Alabama could lose more than $900 million a year if it quits offering out-of-state students from counties near its borders in-state tuition rates for colleges and universities, according to a Jacksonville State University study released Tuesday.  But that is not stopping talk of killing the out-of-state tuition program in Montgomery, where the study was unveiled as education officials discussed possible key changes to the state’s two-year and four-year institutions.

As part of JSU's English Department Lecture Series, Pitt Harding, assistant professor of English, will preside over a reading of short fiction on Thursday, November 13, at 6:00 p.m. in the Second Stage Theater (3rd floor of Stone Center, room 338). The reading will consist of selections from the creative writing class.

Morten Brante will speak at Jacksonville State University Thursday, November 6th at 11:15 in Room 101 Merrill Hall. Brante is the Managing Principal for HP Enterprise Business Practice in the Americas. In this role, he is responsible for leading sales and delivery of e-business services in CRM, Portals, e-commerce, Enterprise Integration and Broadband & Media services. Over the past year Morten and his management team have led an impressive revenue growth which has put HP on the map as a strong provider of e-business services.

11-04-03: JSU Women's Soccer Team To Host First-Round Playoff Game on Nov. 4
The JSU women soccer team's inaugural season in the Ohio Valley Conference is shaping up to be a success story. Not only did the Gamecocks qualify for the OVC tournament in their first year in the league, JSU also earned the right to host a first-round playoff game. JSU Coach Lisa Howe added that a large fan base would really help out the team for the first-round game. The playoff pairings have the Gamecocks slated to take on sixth-seeded Tennessee Tech on Tuesday, November 4th, at 7 p.m. at the JSU Soccer Field. Come support the team at tonight's game.

10-28-03: Karen Davis Named Director of Human Resources
Karen Davis of Jacksonville is the new director of human resources at Jacksonville State University. Mrs. Davis joined JSU as assistant director of human resources in 1990 and rose to acting director in April 2002. She has approximately 15 years of experience in her field.

10-28-03: Free JSU Jazz Concerts in November
JSU's Jazz Bands II and III will hold a free fall concert at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 in a double-billing. They will perform big band concerts featuring jazz music by greats such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich, and Stan Kenton. Jazz Band I will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. on Nov. 21 in the Performance Center.

JSU Drama presents "Handler" by Robert Schenkkan, November 20, 21, 22 at 7:00 p.m. and November 23 at 2:00 p.m. This play revolves around the lives of two central characters out of rural Appalachia and depicts the miracles that occur in the rebuilding of their lives. The play is not recommended for those with an aversion to strong language.

The National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week was kicked off by the Jacksonville State University Peer Educators. The Peer Educators had different activities planned everyday to help educate the campus community about the dangers of alcohol.

10-24-03: Dean of JSU's College of Nursing Presents Outlook on the Nursing Shortage
A nursing shortage, which started being felt after the mid-1990s in California, has migrated eastward, causing Alabama to experience a serious nursing shortage, also. Jacksonville State University's Dr. Martha Lavender, dean of the College of Nursing, says the shortage has an impact on JSU, as nursing majors find themselves in demand.

The JSU Wellness Center is continuing to offer Cholesterol Screenings (Lipid Profiles) to all JSU Faculty, Staff, their dependents and retirees on Wednesdays during the Fall Semester starting Wednesday, October 29.  All screenings are conducted in the Wellness Center (204-A Pete Mathews Coliseum).

Please note that this may be different from the procedure or e-mail address you have been using temporarily while my office was experiencing hardware problems. Our last hike of the season takes us to the southern end of the Pinhoti Trail.  Join us as we reach toward the highest point in the state.  This is a moderately strenuous hike.  The leaves will be falling and the views will be spectacular.

Join a team of US Forest Service wildland firefighters and biologists as they illustrate the methods and techniques of prescribed fire used in our Southern forests. This hands-on program will exhibit the biological necessity of fire, the use of prescribed fire in controlling wildfires, and the use of fire by previous cultures. Conditions permitting, the Forest Service will conduct a prescribed fire for all to see. Participants will also receive training to assist the Forest Service in the Forest Burn Monitoring Program.

Recently, the News Bureau received permission to publish abstracts of selected articles pertaining to JSU and higher education and to link to free articles that they post to their affiliate MSNBC which will allow alumni and other off-campus users to read the main points of their copyrighted material. The underlying theme of a recent congressional paper issued by the House Education Committee leadership is that colleges and universities are responsible for unjustified increases in tuition and fees and need to be held accountable for increases exceeding inflationary limits. The American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) normally does not respond to partisan expressions which are part of the legislative process, but in this instance wishes to correct and clarify. Congress's own "Congressionally Mandated Studies of College Costs and Prices" said it clearly: " . . . declining state appropriations is the single most important factor associated with tuition increases."
