May 9, 2003 - Jacksonville State University's 2003 Spring commencement was held in Pete Mathews Coliseum on Friday, April 25, 2003, at 6:30 p.m.

JSU Trustee Pete Mathews delivered the commencement address.

JSU's top graduates include Tanya Holcombe, of Fruithurst, AL; Kristy Waldrop, of Pell City, AL; Brandi Nuss, of Jasper, AL; and Elizabeth Salter, of Jacksonville, AL. These four distinguished students all graduated summa cum laude with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Tanya Holcombe received the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Accounting. Kristy Waldrop, received the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Accounting. Brandi Nuss, received the Bachelor of Science in Education degree with a major in Collaborative Teacher. Elizabeth Salter received the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Geography.

Following closely behind with a near-perfect grade point average are Billy H. Lester, 3.97 GPA, of Boaz, AL; Holli Leanne Washburn, 3.97 GPA, of Gadsden, AL; and Megan Lashell Dunn Barnes, 3.96 GPA, of Steele, AL. Mr. Lester received the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Finance; Ms. Washburn, the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Family and Consumer Sciences; Ms. Barnes, the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Mathematics.

Four of these graduating seniors were presented with special awards for their academic achievements. Billy Lester was the recipient of the Dr. Clarence William Daugette Award for being distinguished as the male graduate with the highest grade point average. He was presented with a silver tray. Brandi Michelle Nuss was the recipient of the Mary C. Forney Award for being distinguished as the most outstanding female graduate in Education. She also was presented with a silver tray. Leilah Rampa was the recipient of the Annie Forney Daugette Award for being distinguished as the female graduate with the highest grade point average in Art. She was presented with a silver tray and medallion. Craig Stephen Bryant was the recipient of the General John H. Forney Award for being distinguished as the student commissioned into the United States Army with the highest grade point average. He was presented with a silver pitcher and two water goblets.

The awarding of honors to graduates by JSU is presented as follows: The designation "cum laude" will be engrossed upon the diplomas of graduating students who obtain a grade point average of 3.5 to 3.69 quality points on hours attempted; "magna cum laude," for a grade point average of 3.7 to 3.89; and "summa cum laude," for a grade point average of 3.9 to 4.0. The designation "with special honors in {major}" will be engrossed upon the diplomas of those who maintain an average of 3.5 in their major field and 3.25 overall.
