JSU To Host
"The Angry World" Conference

October 13, 2003 -- “The Angry World,” a conference of foreign editors from major media, will be held in Anniston and Jacksonville October 21-22. It is jointly sponsored by the Southern Center for International Studies (Atlanta), The Ayers Institute and Jacksonville State University. The conference, which replaces the Ayers Lecture Series this year, will explore the roots of anti-Western sentiment around the world and the implications for the American press in bringing the story to its readers.

The conference moderator will be Terrence Smith of the PBS program, “The News Hour with Jim Lehrer.” Participants from other major news providers are Roger Cohen (New York Times), George de Lama (Chicago Tribune), Marjorie Miller (LA Times), Ann Garrels (or alternate, if she’s in Baghdad) NPR, and representatives from CNN and FOX, yet to be determined.

“The Angry World” will be taped live at JSU on October 22; the television program, to be aired on PBS later in the fall, will be produced by SCIS. Tapes and printed material for educational and training purposes will be developed and distributed to journalism schools around the country.

The conference is funded by the Knight Foundation, The Mott Foundation, and The Hewlett Foundation.

The Anniston Star will host the dinner opening the conference on October 21.

At JSU the conference will be held at the Stone Center for the Performing Arts at 9:15 a.m. October 22. Because the program will be taped, the audience must be seated promptly. The conference is open to the public. Invitations with ticket information will be widely distributed by the sponsors. The Box Office and doors to the theater at JSU will open at 9:00 a.m.

Following the taping, a luncheon will be held at the Houston Cole Library (11th Floor) at JSU. The invitation list for this event will include JSU Deans and communications faculty, Ayers Institute guests from its partner, the University of Alabama, SCIS sponsors and Trustees. The conferees will hold a press conference and Q&A session with JSU students immediately after the luncheon (1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.).
