Certification Opportunities

Length of class Ages
4 hours and 15 minutes 15+

Equips students to recognize and care for a variety of first aid breathing and cardiac emergencies involving adults children and infants. It is designed for students who need a certification that satisfies OSHA workplace or other regulatory requirements. This class is taught in a blended learning format and the online portion (accessed via mobile desktop or tablet) must be completed prior to attending the Instructor-led skills session. Upon successful completion a valid 2 year digital certificate for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED is issued.


  • Add age minimum 14 and length of class 16 hours for Wilderness First Aid 

Designed for scouts and scout leaders, outdoor enthusiasts and anyone who works or spends time in remote environments, this course teaches advanced skills to be used in emergencies when help from professional first responders may be far away. Based on the Boy Scouts of America Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines, this course aligns with OSHA’s Best Practices for Workplace First Aid Training Programs.

Provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. Prerequisites: Minimum age: 15 years; Swim 300 yards continuously; Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs; Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds by starting in the water swimming 20 yards surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point exit the water without using steps or a ladder. Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED valid for 2 years.

The American Red Cross Jr Lifeguarding Program is designed to guide youth ages 11-14 to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. The course focuses on building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills of future lifeguards. 10 week program and is approximately 30 hours in length. Each lesson includes dry land and in-water activities with the exception of the lesson focused on first aid.

  • Basic Water Rescue provides those who participate in aquatic activities or work around water with the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies.
  • This course may meet the States water safety certification requirements for foster care and adoptive parents. Please check with your State agency to confirm.

The Water Safety for Parents and Caregivers Online Course focuses on developing an awareness of the risks of drowning and how to minimize those risks especially for young children. This course teaches parents and caregivers about the concepts of the circle of drowning prevention water competency and the chain of drowning survival. It also provides guidance for applying water safety to common environments and situations where children are most at risk for drowning.

Babysitters Training provides youth who are planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and infants. This training will help participants to develop leadership skills; learn how to develop a babysitting business keep themselves and others safe and help children behave; and learn about basic child care and basic first aid. The recommended age for this course is 11-15 years old.

Basic Life Support, or BLS, generally refers to the type of care that first-responders, healthcare providers and public safety professionals provide to anyone who is experiencing cardiac arrest, respiratory distress or an obstructed airway. It requires knowledge and skills in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), using automated external defibrillators (AED) and relieving airway obstructions in patients of every age.

The course will teach you the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and how to care for a person having a severe allergic reaction including how to administer epinephrine using an auto-injector device.

The First Aid for Opioid Overdoses Online course will provide you with the knowledge and confidence you need to respond to a suspected opioid overdose emergency. You will learn to identify the signs and symptoms of a suspected opioid overdose and then the appropriate care to provide based on the responsiveness of the person.This course includes information on how to use several different naloxone products -- a nasal atomizer, Narcan and EVZIO -- to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. This interactive course includes audio and video and takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. You must pass a final quiz to complete the course.

The Asthma skill boost module provides individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize an asthma attack and give care for a person experiencing an attack by administering medication until advanced EMS personnel arrive and begin their care of the person. This module includes the demonstration of, and skill practice session and assessment scenario for, administering quick-relief medication using an inhaler with a spacer. In addition, optional content is available for administering quick-relief medication using a nebulizer device.


All classes are open to the community. JSU Students, Faculty and University organizations will receive preferred pricing.
