Vail College Fellows

Thank you for considering Jax State! We are impressed by your participation in undergraduate research with your BSC faculty. We want you to know that opportunities  for undergraduate scholarly and creative activity exist at Jax State.

Vail College Fellows may be interested in the following:

Scaffolded throughout the biology curriculum, students will participate in course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs). The biology faculty believe students cannot learn to be scientists without doing real science. Students will learn to read scientific literature, design their own scientifically relevant research questions, complete experimental protocols to address their questions, collect and analyze their data, and present their results to varied audiences. This engaging approach has transformed the way science is taught and the way students learn. While only a small percentage of students at large research universities get to participate in undergraduate research, most students who complete biology degrees and take all of their core courses at JSU will participate in FIVE authentic research experiences—just through their required curriculum.

Jax State students present original research annually at the JSU Student Symposium, where the top presentations are recognized with prizes. For more information, visit the website with this year’s program.

Mentored by faculty, Jax State students in the arts exhibit, perform, present, and publish their work. From the annual juried student art show to recitals to film festivals, students share their creative activity with the public. And our creative writing students publish in a student-run journal. Jax State students also present their work at conferences and compete for awards, such as the ADDYs. Arts students also display their accomplishments at the annual Innovation Expo.

The Psychology Department offers undergraduate research courses in which students conduct research projects with faculty mentors. These projects are designed based on faculty's ongoing research programs, or in some cases, individually based on a student's specific interest. For students seeking experience in basic research, we have a newly renovated animal laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment for conducting studies with rats. Our research students are encouraged to present their findings at local, state, regional, and national conferences.

The Sociology Department offers opportunities for undergraduate research through independent study courses and/or grant-funded research assistantships. In these roles, students collaborate with faculty mentors to conduct research projects. Typically, these projects align with faculty members' ongoing research programs, covering diverse topics such as end of life doulas, bouncers at drinking establishments, juvenile delinquency, Harry Potter fandom, sexual assault, deviance, and more. Additionally, students have the option to pursue research projects based on their specific interests. Students have the opportunity to receive funding to present at conferences, and many sociology students' research projects have led to publications.
