Student Literary Journal Receives National Recognition

The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) has awarded Jacksonville State University’s student literary journal, “Something Else,” a superior ranking in its Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines contest.

The national competition was created by NCTE to encourage schools and colleges to develop literary magazines to celebrate the craft of writing. This year, 375 student magazines were nominated, representing 46 states and five countries.

PCover of the 2023 issue of Something Else. ublished annually by the JSU Writers’ Club, “Something Else” showcases students’ creative writing, editorial capabilities, visual art and design work. The journal is advised by Dr. Kimberly Southwick-Thompson, assistant professor of English. A published poet in her own right, she serves as founder and editor of the literary arts journal, “Gigantic Sequins.”

“Having been a part of literary journals throughout my entire education, being advisor to ‘Something Else’ via my role as Writers' Club advisor is truly a dream come true for me,” Dr. Southwick-Thompson said. “To see the students earn national recognition is such an honor.”

The literary magazine is accepting submissions for the 2024 edition at somethingelse@jsu.edu through Feb. 1 in the following categories:

  • Poetry – No more than 50 lines
  • Prose – No more than 2,500 words
  • Drama – No more than 12 pages
  • Art – Paintings, drawings and other visual art pieces (submit photos of the artwork)
The Writers’ Club is also hosting a Valentine’s and Anti-Valentine’s Writing Contest now through Feb. 14. Submit up to three total entries, following the same categories listed above, focused on the themes of love or heartbreak. The top three submissions in each category will be published in “Something Else.”

Students interested in joining Writers’ Club are welcome to attend club meetings on Fridays, 2:30-4:30 p.m., in Merrill Hall, Room 368.
