Duo Security

What is Duo Security?

DUO Security is a service that allows a second factor, such as a mobile device, be used for authentication.

In order to better protect against cybersecurity threats and online fraudulent activities, DUO Two-Factor Authentication is required to access JSU email accounts and student financial accounts.

DUO FAQs

Two-factor authentication, also referred to as multi-factor authentication, provides an additional layer of security when logging in to your online accounts.

Verifying your identity using a second factor (such as a mobile device) prevents anyone but you from logging in, even if they know your password. Essentially, it is combining something you know (your password) with something you have (your mobile device) to better prove your identity and enhance the security of you online accounts

Upon attempting to access a DUO protected application, you will be required to first provide your MyJaxState username and password if it hasn't already been given. You will then be prompted to authenticate with your registered device using DUO Push or a Passcode. After verifying your identity with you mobile device, you will be securely logged in to the protected application

DUO Push - This is the recommended and easiest method of authentication. If you have the DUO Mobile App installed on your smartphone or tablet, you can receive a push notification. From the app, you will approve or deny the login attempt.

Passcodes - You can receive a passcode by tapping the key icon in the DUO Mobile App. This does not require any wireless connectivity. The DUO app is available for iOS, Android, and Windows phones. For phones where the app is not available you may request a passcode be sent via a text message

Yes. It is actually recommended that you add more than one device to your account. This increases the odds of you always having a device you can use to access your account. It also gives you easier access to add/remove your devices through the DUO Device Management Portal in MyJaxState in the event you get a new device or no longer have access to one of your enrolled devices.  To use this portal you will need to have access to at least one currently enrolled device. If you only have one enrolled device, need to add a new device, and you no longer have the device, please contact the Technology Support Center at 256-782-8324 for assistance.

If you have lost your enrolled device and have more than one device on your account you may use the DUO Device Management Portal in MyJaxState to remove the device from you account and add a new one. If the lost device is your only enrolled device you will need to contact the Technology Support Center at 256-782-8324 for assistance.

We understand there are circumstances where someone besides you would need to access your account. You do not need to give anyone your credentials or add their device to DUO in order to grant them access to your financial account. Once you have authenticated to your account, you can choose the Authorized Users menu option. From there, you may add additional users that are authorized to access your account. Once you add them, they will receive a direct email allowing them to setup their own account credentials and will access the account from a direct link outside of MyJaxState.

Yes. The passcode option on the DUO app does not require wifi or cellular connectivity, it even works on airplane mode. To use this option, open the DUO app on your phone, and tap the key icon to obtain a passcode.

Once a passcode is generated in DUO Mobile, it will display for 60 seconds or until you generate another code. The code itself does not expire until it is used. If you generate a second code the first code is still valid until the second code gets used for an authentication. You can generate codes in advance of needing them. Multiple codes will remain valid as long as they are used in the order they were created.

JSU Email accounts, Student Financial Account access, and VPN accounts are protected by DUO Security. This list may potentially grow over time.

Select the red X to deny access to your account, then promptly change your MyJaxState password. If you have used that password with other services, it is strongly recommended that you change those passwords as well.

If your phone number has not changed, you may be able to use the account restore feature.

  • For iOS devices, you must have iCloud setup and are backing up your device to iCloud. After you have restored your new device from your iCloud backup, open the DUO Mobile app on the new device and choose the Reconnect option.
  • For Android devices, you will need to manually enable DUO Restore in the app. This can be done from the prompt when you added your first account to the app or from the settings menu in the app. If the previous device has been backed up to your Google account, you will need to download the mobile app onto the new device and select "Get Account Back" from the welcome screen.
  • While performing the restore from either iOS or Android, you will be required to authenticate with another device on your account or use the SMS text message option to receive a passcode to reactive the device.

If you have a new phone number or were unable to use the DUO restore feature, you may use the DUO Device Management Portal in MyJaxState if you have previously added a second device to your account. If you do not have a secondary device to access the portal, please contact the Technology Support Center at 256-782-8324 for assistance.
