Dr. Calhoun is a first-generation college student who grew up in Calhoun County. She received her Bachelor's, Master's, and Educational Specialist Degrees in Elementary Education from Jacksonville State University while teaching in public school systems in JSU's Region 6. Dr. Calhoun joined Jacksonville State University's College of Education and Professional Studies in August 2013 as an Instructor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. She received her Doctorate of Education in Elementary Education with a focus on Literacy from The University of Alabama in December 2018. From 2018-2021, Dr. Calhoun served as an Assistant Professor for the teacher education program.
Courses Taught
From 2013-2021, Dr. Calhoun specialized in literacy courses including Children's Literature, Language Arts, and Teaching Reading, and has supervised both practicum students and interns. In 2021, she moved into an interim administration position where she continues to serve as well as teach literacy courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.Education
Dr. Calhoun is a three-time alumnus from Jacksonville State University, having earned 3 degrees in Elementary Education prior to obtaining her terminal degree from The University of Alabama. After completing the Ed.D. program at The University of Alabama, Dr. Calhoun completed the certification add-on in Instructional Leadership from Jacksonville State University, giving her four degrees/certifications from Jacksonville State University.Academic & Research Interests
Dr. Calhoun's research interests include literacy, specifically the science of reading, writing, leadership, and teacher retention. She is also very passionate about secondary education literacy supports and has designed a literacy course specifically for secondary educators and reading coaches.Dr. Calhoun, along with 4 other JSU colleagues, was in the first cohort of LETRS facilitators to be trained in the state of Alabama, leading her and the JSU faculty to becoming the first university in Alabama to offer LETRS certification to pre-service teachers.
Other Responsibilities
Dr. Calhoun is currently working on developing and implementing innovative teacher education programs including JSU's FutureEd Apprenticeship Program and the Rising Scholars pathway. Both initiatives are designed to increase the teacher pipeline from regional partner schools to JSU, then back to those schools to fill gaps in the teacher shortage.Publications and Presentations
