AI Acknowledgement and Citation for Faculty Scholarship

Faculty must be aware that, when using AI tools for research and scholarly writing, they must both acknowledge the AI tool used and cite the information gathered while using it. Jacksonville State University supports the ethical use of AI in accord with our faculty members' varied disciplines.  

Acknowledgement

Many publishers now require some form of AI acknowledgement. Faculty should ensure their scholarship meets any publisher standards. Purdue University lists many academic publishers and their policies.

Citation

Please use your discipline’s style guide when citing information gathered by using an AI tool (APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.).

Check with your publisher for any further AI citation guidelines. 

Guidelines for the use of generative AI in research:

• Third-party disclosure - Entering private, confidential, or restricted information into a public AI tool constitutes disclosure to a third party.
• Unintended disclosure - Prompts, queries, and uploaded content such as research data, grant proposals, and analytical results may be retained or used by the tool and should be treated as public disclosure unless the tool is approved for such use.
• Context-dependent - Appropriate use of generative AI varies by discipline, context, and purpose. A use that is acceptable in one setting may be inappropriate in another.
• Responsibility of the researcher - All individuals involved in research, including faculty, students, staff, postdoctoral scholars, and other trainees, are responsible for understanding and following applicable policies and standards.
• Research integrity - Researchers are responsible for the integrity of their work, including verifying accuracy, using reliable sources, properly attributing ideas, and disclosing AI use when required.
• Supervisory responsibility - Supervisors of research teams should ensure that all members understand the opportunities and responsibilities associated with generative AI.
• Research transparency - Use of generative AI must be transparent and appropriately documented. Disclosure requirements vary by discipline and context, but material use of AI should be clearly reported.
• Publishing - Researchers should remain aware of guidance from journals, publishers, professional associations, and funders regarding the creation and use of AI-generated content.
