Academic Freedom and the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Teaching and Scholarship
As outlined in the JSU Faculty Handbook, academic freedom affords faculty members the autonomy to determine acceptable uses of artificial intelligence (AI) within their courses, including both their own professional use and expectations for student use. In light of the rapid evolution of generative AI technologies, all instructors are expected to update their course syllabi each semester to include clear and explicit guidance regarding the acceptable use of generative AI in their courses.
Jacksonville State University encourages faculty to thoughtfully articulate their individual stance on AI use, recognizing that a single, institution-wide policy is neither feasible nor sustainable given the diversity of disciplines, pedagogical approaches, and instructional philosophies represented across the University. A flexible, faculty-driven approach better reflects the varied ways AI may intersect with teaching, learning, and scholarship.
Faculty are encouraged to consider not only how students may or may not use AI tools in coursework, but also how AI fits into their own professional, creative, and scholarly practices. Understanding how AI tools are applied within specific disciplines allows faculty to more confidently and ethically integrate AI into their research and teaching. This confidence supports the development of transparent course expectations that define appropriate use, encourage ethical behavior, and create space for meaningful conversations with students about the role of AI in the learning process. Clear guidance also provides important context, should questions related to academic integrity arise.
To support faculty in this process, Jax State has compiled example syllabus language and guidance drawn from individual instructors, peer institutions, and centers for teaching and learning. These resources are provided as references to help faculty explore approaches that best align with their course objectives and to support informed decision-making as comfort with AI tools continues to evolve.
