The Department of English offers many internship opportunities with campus and community partners. To be eligible for an English internship, you must

  • Be an English major or minor in any concentration (Creative Writing, Literature, or Professional Writing)
  • Have completed at least 6 hours of 300+ English classes
  • And secure the permission of Internship Coordinator and Department Head, Dr. Andrea Porter.

Social Media and Digital Creation Intern
Digital Media Services

Job Description

Digital Media Services, a unit of JSU Marketing and Communications, will host a part-time (10 hours per week) Social Media and Digital Creation Intern in Spring Semester 2023. This intern should be able to create social media content, write email copy, and tell compelling stories to a variety of on- and off-campus stakeholders. Experience with video editing is a plus. Intern will receive compensation of $750 in flex dollars to be used at campus dining locations (if intern already has a meal plan, this compensation can be converted to a one-time honorarium).

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist Director of Digital Media Services and Interactive Designer with planning, developing, and communicating content about JSU students, staff, faculty, programs, and initiatives
  • Interview JSU stakeholders to create content for website and social media
  • Compose email and press release copy
  • Create social media content for official JSU Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter channels
  • Design social media strategy through assessing needs, conducting user research, and identifying key themes and objectives
  • Edit video content

Preferred Skills and Knowledge

Content Strategy Intern
Alabama Commission on Higher Education: All in Alabama Campaign

Job Description

The Alabama Commission on Higher Education (ACHE) is seeking a part-time Content Strategy Intern in Spring Semester 2023. This intern will implement and evaluate website and social media content for All in Alabama, a new statewide initiative designed to retain current and former Alabama graduates and keep those highly-qualified and educated individuals in the state’s workforce. ACHE is looking for an undergraduate student with experience in content creation, social media management and/or strategy, copywriting, online publishing, digital writing, and graphic design. The student should be a motivated and committed individual who can combine their technical, writing, and project management skills to deliver digital content and continue developing strategy for this campaign. This is a paid internship opportunity: the intern will receive compensation at $15/hour for 10 hours per week during the Spring 2023 semester.

Job Responsibilities

  • Schedule, post, and assess previously-created website and social media content for the All in Alabama campaign, using web CMS and social media management tools
  • Develop and gather textual and graphic content to engage Alabama student, alumni, and employer stakeholders
  • Compose email and press release copy
  • Create and maintain a repository of images, tools, and designs
  • Adhere to design and social media style guide and strategy, and revise/add to these guides as appropriate

Preferred Skills and Knowledge

Editorial Intern
Gigantic Sequins Literary Journal

Job Description

Gigantic Sequins, a print literary-arts journal that has been in print for over a decade, will host a part-time Editorial Intern in Spring 2023. The intern will experience and be a part of the inner workings of this publication, working closely with Dr. Kimberly Southwick-Thompson, JSU English and Creative Writing professor and Editor-in-Chief of GS. This intern will expand understanding of how a print publication is produced, and contribute to the journal’s production from submission of works to final distribution of printed issues.

Job Responsibilities

  • Copyedit and proof submitted works
  • Track submissions and build repositories of documents and records
  • Update and maintain Editors Schedule for current and upcoming issues
  • Schedule tweets and Facebook posts promoting journal contributions
  • Pack and mail issues, keeping detailed records for distribution
  • Brainstorm and implement new ideas for journal promotions and initiatives

Communications and Special Projects Intern
Honors and Special Programs

Job Description

JSU’s Office of Honors and Special Programs will host a part-time (10 hours per week) Communications and Special Projects Intern in Spring Semester 2023. This office provides students with opportunities for high-impact, experiential learning through initiatives like the JSU Honors Program, Study Away, Pre-Law, Model United Nations (MUN), Model Arab League (MAL), and the American Democracy Project. This intern will support the work of the office by creating website content, promotional materials, email messaging, and social media posts and strategy.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist Senior Director with branding and messaging
  • Edit and format documents for a variety of student audiences and other stakeholders
  • Compose email, website, and social media content
  • Create and edit educational and/or technical writing materials (tip sheets, how-to guides, documentation, etc.)
  • Articulate social media strategy and build a repository of materials for social media engagement

Houston Cole Library

Job Description

JSU’s Houston Cole Library will host a part-time (10 hours per week) Communications Intern in Spring Semester 2023. We are looking for an undergraduate student with experience in email messaging, social media content creation, editing, blogging, and technical writing. The intern should be able to build the Library’s promotions and media for student audiences.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist Head of Technical Services and Library faculty and staff with planning, developing, and communicating content about library events, programs, initiatives, and services
  • Compose web and social media content and build social media strategy
  • Edit and format correspondence, print, and digital content
  • Design educational documents (such as brochures and fact sheets) and promotional materials (such as event flyers and advertisements)
  • Develop technical writing materials (such as documentation, manuals, and how-to or help guides) for library services and tools

JSU’s Strategic Communications division (under the Office of the President) will host a part-time (10 hours per week) Communications Intern in Spring Semester 2023. We are looking for an undergraduate student with experience or interests in email messaging, editing, media relations, and technical writing. The intern should be able to contribute to Strategic Communications’ promotional and educational materials for a variety of audiences and stakeholders.

The Office of Admissions will host a part-time (10 hours per week) Undergraduate Admissions Communication Intern in Spring Semester 2023. We are looking for an intern who can enhance the office’s storytelling and educational/promotional material development for all areas of undergraduate admissions: freshmen, transfer students, dual enrollment, and out-of-state.

  • Assist Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions & Recruitment with planning, developing, and communicating content about for a variety of print and digital channels, including print, email, and newsletters
  • Identify potential admission communications growth areas, such as podcasting and social media

The JSU Writing Center will host a part-time Social Media Intern in Spring Semester 2023 to support the center’s digital promotions, education, and outreach. We are looking for an undergraduate student with experience in content creation, social media management and/or strategy, copywriting, online publishing, digital writing, and graphic design.
