The Shakespeare Project provides creative development for young teachers and artists, education enhancement experiences, and community cultural experiences. Our goal continues to be providing professional, classic art experiences for free, removing the barriers to art accessibility and aiding in curriculum comprehension.

The JSU Foundation, through collaborative relationships with individuals, corporations, foundations, and others, creates opportunities that will provide additional support to the students, programs, services, and educational community of Jacksonville State University. The Shakespeare Project is one of its specialized programs, benefitting education in our region, creating research experiences for our students and providing services for both students and the community at large.

The 15-county region serviced by JSU has 195 public schools serving 77,352 students. The average rate of students on free and reduced lunch in JSU’s 15-county region is 51.2%.  JSU, a public, regional, comprehensive university in northeastern Alabama, enrolls about 10,000 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The majority of JSU’s students are from the 15-county region the university services, and, in 2022, 80% of JSU students used some form of financial aid, a statistic that mirrors state and regional demographics. Many of our region's students have less discretionary income in their homes and are unable to afford certain types of opportunities. Alabama has the 5th lowest median household income, at $53,958. JSU’s 15-county service region has 17.5% living in poverty.

In-Kind Support

We also seek in-kind contributions of lighting and sound equipment, costuming materials and fabrics, lumber and hardware, and volunteer services to aid in the completion of the build and provide resources for future seasons.

Volunteer in the Guild

Volunteer Services needed include shop assistants, for both scenery and costumes, helping with loading in, serving as ushers and house managers, being a host family, and striking the set upon completion of the show run.
