Frequently Asked Questions

Dean of Honors and Special Programs, Dr. Lori Owens, answers some of the most frequently asked questions about the Honors Program at JSU.

The priority deadline is May 1, but we recommend that incoming freshmen apply before Gamecock Orientation (GO!) begins in June. If you are a current student, you may apply at any time, during the year - except in rare cases students are required to apply during the fall or spring of their freshman year. However, please note that you will be required to adjust your schedule to meet the Honors requirements.

If you have been accepted to JSU and are Honors eligible you may apply for Early Honors even before you begin at JSU.  Link to Honors application, as long as you apply before the May 1 deadline. For example. if you are a high school senior in March and have been accepted to JSU you can apply for Early Honors.

Students must apply to Honors no later than the spring semester of their Freshman year. Please contact Honors to discuss a Plan of Study for earning the required Honors hours prior to graduation.

Honors courses are original, enriching, and often taught by JSU’s most innovative and engaging faculty. Honors courses are smaller than the non-Honors sections. Honors courses are not designed to be more difficult than non-Honors courses.

Tuition is the same for Honors courses and non-Honors courses.

General university courses are offered with an Honors section. Additionally, Honors by Contract and Honors seminars will be available through academic advisement in consultation with the Dean of the Honors Program. Honors Program members have first priority in registering for Honors classes
