Cole Bridges

Major: Criminal Justice

"As a first-generation student, there are many unknowns when it comes to college. Whether it is registering for classes, navigating a college campus, or simply learning what credit hours are, college can be daunting for someone with no prior experience. I was afraid I would experience this, but Jax State has an incredible staff of supporters who are there to guide students throughout their college journey. No student should feel like they cannot go to college simply because their parents did not. I am so glad that I chose to attend college, and I am proud to be a first-generation student. "

Advice to fellow First Gens: "My advice to fellow first-generation students is to get involved! Getting involved is one of the best ways to meet people and make the most of your college experience. I have met many of my closest friends through the organizations I am involved in, including Freshman Forum, Ambassadors, the Honors College, and others. Getting involved has not only helped me find a community at Jax State but has also given me opportunities to grow as a student and leader. "

Vanessa Corona

Major: Secondary Mathematics Education

"Being a first-generation student at Jax State has been both challenging and memorable. The community I have built here has guided me to be the person I am today! From the friends, professors, and colleagues I have met throughout my time at Jax State, each person has helped guide me through my many questions and pushed me out of my comfort zone. I am grateful for the relationships I have built and the support I have received throughout my journey."

Advice to fellow First Gens: "Step out of your comfort zone and meet new people! You belong here, so take advantage of the many opportunities Jax State has to offer! "

Jasmin Lopez-Olmos

Major: Early Childhood/Elementary Education

"Being a First-generation here at Jax State has been an incredible journey of growth, learning, and thriving. Coming into college, I didn’t know what to expect until I learned to step out of my comfort zone, build meaningful connections, get involved, and overall take advantage of the opportunities campus has to offer. Being a First-generation student has really pushed me to grow in ways I never imagined. I learned that thriving in college isn't about having everything figured out but being open to new experiences and remembering that you belong in every room and opportunity you enter here in Jax State. "

Advice to fellow First Gens: "My biggest piece of advice is to be patient. Patience really is key, especially when being in a new environment. It's okay to not have things figured out right away. Growth takes time and the beautiful thing about it you have plenty! "

RaMel Ruffin

Major:  Accounting

"Coming into college, there were a lot of things I had to learn and figure out on my own, but JAX State has given me opportunities to grow both personally and professionally. Getting involved in organizations such as the JAX State Ambassadors, Lambda Sigma, and Senate has helped me find my place on campus, build relationships, and become more confident as a leader. Being a first-generation student has also motivated me to make the most of my college experience and create opportunities for myself that I can be proud of. "

Advice to fellow First Gens: "My biggest piece of advice is not to be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. Get involved, ask questions, and take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. You may not always know what you’re doing at first, and that’s okay. College is a learning experience, and you don’t have to have everything figured out right away. Most importantly, believe in yourself and remember that being a first-generation student is something to be proud of. "

Major: Special Education

"Being a first-generation college student has given me a unique perspective on higher education. When I first arrived at Jax State, I was nervous about the challenges and obstacles I might face. Looking back, choosing Jax State was one of the best decisions I could have made. The faculty, staff, and students have created an environment where I have felt supported, encouraged, and empowered to succeed.
Throughout my time here, I have grown both personally and professionally in ways I never imagined. From the moment I stepped onto campus, Jax State has helped shape me into a more confident leader, student, and future educator. As I prepare for graduation, I am grateful for the experiences, relationships, and opportunities that have made such a lasting impact on my journey. "

Advice to Fellow First Gens: "I would say being yourself and getting involved! I would not be where I am today, if I did not step out of my comfort zone and wanting to meet so many different people! "

Wanya De'Vall Goodgain

Major: Emergency Management

"My experience at JSU has been awesome! I never planned on attending college because I landed a high-paying job with great benefits right out of high school. The thing that no one told me was that in order to move up I would need more education. Once I was established in my career and home life, I made the decision to go to college. After graduating from community college I wanted to continue to further my education." "I graduate in May of 2024. After that, my goal is to get a position in my field of study and continue my education here at JSU by earning my MPA."

Advice to fellow First Gens: "The best advice I could give other first-generation students is to never give up. The people around you may not understand what you're up against or why you're doing what you're doing but it's always best to show them."

Alexa Lusk

Major: Music Education

"Being a first gen student brought challenges that I never really expected. You’re brand new to being an adult and all of the sudden you’re dealing with things that the adults in your life have never dealt with. It’s terrifying! But, it’s completely manageable with help."

Advice to fellow First Gens: "Get connected! I know, I’m an introvert too so I understand not wanting to put yourself out there, however I cannot stress how important it is to talk to people, meet people, join clubs, find your community! Those are the people who will carry and give you the strength to come back for another semester, especially when your parents didn’t get the chance to do it first."

Dakota Ward

Major: Sport Management

"It means new opportunities and experiences for me and my family. I’ve seen my family members before me struggle to get a job that they were very much qualified in, just because they didn’t have a degree. I’m happy to know that won’t be me!"

Advice to fellow First Gens: "You can do it. It may seem like a difficult change at first but you got (this), just go step by step. Your advisors will help you out!"

Alysabeth Sheppard

Major: Exercise Science - Human Performance

"It never really entered my mind that I wouldn't go to college, however, I was never pushed to get a 4 year degree as long as I found a career in which I could support myself. Learning and life experiences can come in many different forms. My sister completed one year of college and joined the Coast Guard. I admire her very much for the career path she has chosen. However, I have always wanted to be involved in athletics and would love to be an athletic trainer some day. In order to do that, college was my only choice and, since I am a candidate for graduation this semester I am glad that I followed that career path here at JSU."

Advice to Fellow First Gens: "I would say don't feel like a university setting is not for you. JSU is a perfect size to be able to get lost if you feel the need or to be a part of many organizations. JSU is truly a very friendly campus with faculty and staff that want you to be successful."

Morgan Freeman

Major: Early Education

"I feel as though my experience as a first generation college student might be a little different than others because I’m also a first generation high school sophomore. Being a first generation high school graduate to me meant helping my mom learn to read books bigger than middle school chapter books, it also meant helping my dad with math he couldn’t understand. But being a first generation college student means creating a new legacy and a new chapter to my family history. My experience, in being a first generation college student, is just that my first year I felt really alone since none of my family had ever been to college. I didn’t really have anyone to help me adjust to it or tell me what to expect. which was really hard for a little while until I found people that could help me adjust!"

Advice to Fellow First Gens: "...Find your people, find people you’re comfortable with and people that you can lean on for support!"

Angela Goss

Major: Secondary Education English Language Arts

"My experience has been great so far! It has been a little bit of a struggle being away from home, but I’ve been doing well in all of my classes. I feel that I am making my family proud by being the first one to go to a 4-year university as well as being in the honors program here and I hope to continue to make them proud."

Advice to Fellow First Gens: "Just because you are the first one, don’t lose confidence that you can’t make it in college. Be the first one in your family even if you are afraid. Have confidence in yourself. <3 "

Deanna Austin

On Being First-Gen: "Being first-gen means to me that I know I'm the first in my family to college, but that makes me want to finish and graduate even more."

Advice to Fellow First-Gens: "Don't drop out after your first year. It gets easier!"

Nikita Norman

Major: Occupational Safety & Health Management

On Being First-Gen: "Being a First Gen brings me joy. I take a lot of pride and what I have accomplished because this is only the beginning for me. The real journey starts after graduation. I hope to inspire many young adults to pursue their dreams no matter the circumstance."

Accomplishments That Make Her Proud: "I am proud to be an Ambassador of the Applied Engineering Dept. I am proud to be currently employed in my field of work as a Safety Contractor. Last but not least, I am proud to be a soon to be graduate of JSU."

Advice to Fellow First-Gens: "One piece of advice that I want to share with other first-generation students is to relax and enjoy your college experience, there is a lot of pressure being a first-generation student."

Favorite Jax State Thing: "The thing that I like most about JSU is the friendliness of the staff and fellow students."

One Misconception You Had About College: "I was really worried about having to manage adult life on my own but I really haven't had to because there have been people at JSU willing to help me from day one."

Accomplishments That Make You Proud: "I am an English learner and even so I am attending university. It is a bit difficult but I am proud that despite not speaking English fluently I am taking this path that only leads me to great things."

"Coming from Georgia, the first two months of school was a little hard for me because I didn’t know anyone and was away from my family for the first time ever; however, I’ve adapted to my new home and have grown comfortable on campus after experiencing new things. To me, being a first generation college student means that I’m opening a new door for my three younger siblings to pass through when they get older, and showing my parents that all their hard work and sacrifice was worth it."

Rachel Bonner

Major: Pre-Health Professional Biology

Future Plans: "When I graduate, I hope to attend medical school at UAB and receive a medical degree and license, allowing me to practice psychiatry and eventually open my own practice."

Accomplishments That Make Her Proud: "Academically, I’m proud of maintaining a perfect GPA throughout high school and so far in college, as well as scoring a 30 on my ACT. Extracurricular, I’m proud to have belonged to numerous clubs throughout my life, all of which have given back to the community frequently. Being able to give back has given me a sense of empathy and understanding for those around me, which I am the most grateful for. I encourage every student, first generation or not, to get involved with the community and see how it influences you as well."

Favorite Jax State Thing: "My favorite thing about Jax State is the small town aspect of this campus. Every time I walk into the TMB, I never fail to see someone I know. JSU truly is the Friendliest Campus in the South!"

Future Plans: "Start working as a crime scene investigator somewhere back home and eventually join the FBI!"

Advice to Fellow First-Gens: "Enjoy the next four years. They go by so fast! Make the right connections and study hard."

Being First-Gen Means: "My experience here at JSU has been the best so far. I’ve learned things about myself I never thought I knew and I did things I never thought I could do. Being first generation means a lot to me because I am doing this for my younger family members so they can understand anything is possible with a great attitude."

"My experience has been a roller coaster but it’s been amazing to learn and see all the new things college can bring you. Being a first generation to me means being strong. Only a first generation student knows how hard things get mentally, it’s something you have to be strong for."

"Being a first generation college student has given me the ability to broaden my horizons, gain perspectives outside of my own small circle, and has provided me with a sense of accomplishment that I did not know was possible. Being a first gen comes with a lot of pressure to succeed and prove myself, but it has been so rewarding. "I didn't know what to expect. I didn't realize how many students went here. It means a lot being a first gen. With that being said, it's also scary. My family always brags how I'm pre-med and so do my coworkers, which puts a lot of weight on my shoulders to graduate."

"At first, I had no clue I could be considered a first generation student. Although neither of my parents completed college, my older sister was the first to graduate from our family so I thought that she would be the only first generation college student in our family. Little did I know, my brother and I are first generation college students, too! All three of us have earned a Bachelor's Degree from Jacksonville State University. Being a first generation college student means that from this point on, there are no excuses in our family. If the three of us could do it, then I know the future generations will be able to achieve it, too! I want our story to help inspire other first generation siblings."

"Going to college and navigating college life was really hard for me! None of my family knew how to help me when I decided to apply to JSU! Before my parents passed, their biggest wish was that I further my education! JSU has the best support system and because of that, I am succeeding in everything I had always hoped for!"

"For me, being a first gen means that I get to reach for the stars and really make something of myself. Neither of my parents were able to finish their education, my mom got her high school diploma and my dad never got to start high school. So they really wanted their kids to get a good education. My mom passed away when I was 11 and she didn’t get to see me graduate high school. Therefore, I really focus on making her and my dad proud while also pushing every day to make the world a better place in any possible way I can."
