Mica Mecham
Instructor of English

Presents: Doggy Paddling in the Deep End: Staying Afloat in 2020

2020 has presented faculty with many unique teaching challenges including web-enhanced learning, online synchronous class meetings, mandatory mask wearing, and socially distanced classrooms. These extra demands have taken a toll on both students and teachers, causing many to struggle to adjust to the extenuating circumstances of the semester. Join me in a virtual discussion about the challenges many faculty are facing simply staying above water in the classroom. We will talk about ways to better engage with and connect to our students, many of whom are also struggling to adjust, particularly when it comes to learning and understanding web-enhanced course materials. Discussion will include best practices for incorporating technology in the classroom, effective communication strategies and combatting the feeling of being overwhelmed.

Location & Time: Teams Virtual Meeting, 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.

Dr. Staci Stone, Dean of Arts and Humanities

Dr. Andrea Porter, Department Head of English

Katelyn Williams, Instructor of English

Presents:

Writing Across the Curriculum: An Open Conversation about Writing Practices, Writing-Intensive Course Syllabi, and Faculty Needs

As we develop a broader understanding of the Writing Across the Curriculum program aims and goals at JSU, faculty who will be teaching "Writing-Intensive" courses within their disciplines can better determine how classroom practices fit into the context of these larger ideas. "An Open Conversation" will address the outcomes for Writing-Intensive courses, providing faculty with a foundation for course development, and, specifically, syllabi creation. Further, faculty will have the opportunity to identify areas of interest and needs as they establish their own WI courses.

Location & Time: Teams Virtual Meeting, 3:00 p.m.
