Dan Mertens

Dr. Daniel P. Mertens holds the Glenn Huie Eminent Scholar Chair and serves as Professor of Management in the College of Business and Industry at Jacksonville State University. A Fulbright U.S. Scholar (2024–25), he conducted research and taught at the University of Tomas Bata in Zlín, Czechia, becoming the first JSU College of Business and Industry faculty member to receive a Fulbright award. He earned his Ph.D. in Management and MBA in Marketing and Entrepreneurship from the University of Arizona.

Dr. Mertens maintains an active research program at the intersection of strategic management, organizational decision making, and management history. His research has accumulated more than 595 citations, including a single article cited more than 350 times and a 2024 article recognized as one of the Journal of Management History's most downloaded of the year. He has reviewed manuscripts for leading journals including the Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, and the Journal of Management Studies, and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Competitiveness. His contributions to the discipline have earned recognition at both institutional and disciplinary levels, including the Southwest Academy of Management Distinguished Educator Award. Manuscripts are currently under review at the Journal of Human Relations and the Journal of Management Education. His research reflects an active collaborative network of scholars from colleagues at Jacksonville State University and at institutions across the United States and internationally, with research streams examining employee behavior, organizational ethics, and the application of management history to contemporary organizational challenges.

An experienced academic leader with extensive AACSB accreditation expertise, Dr. Mertens has chaired strategic planning initiatives at multiple institutions and developed academic programs at three universities. He serves on the U.S. Department of State's Fulbright Scholar Fellowship Review Committee and has taught across undergraduate, MBA, doctoral, and executive levels at American and international universities, earning teaching awards at four institutions throughout his career. He was unanimously inducted into The Business Strategy Game Hall of Fame as a Master Professor of Strategic Management from a pool of more than 4,000 registered simulation instructors worldwide. He has served as a doctoral dissertation committee member for more than a dozen scholars at institutions across the United States and internationally.
