Cocky Business: Faith, Family, and Fresh Food: Jax State Alums Turn Passion Into Purpose at Swheat Market Deli

Swheat Market Deli

What started as a leap of faith between two cousins has blossomed into a beloved eatery where faith, family, and community are always on the menu. In October 2023, Tillery Rice (‘19) and Chloe Tidwell (’23)—two Jax State alumnae and lifelong best friends—took ownership of Swheat Market Deli in Cartersville, GA, transforming their dream into a flavorful reality.

“We’ve been through so much together—laughing, crying, and celebrating—and now we get to share this incredible journey of building something we’re both so passionate about,” said Tillery. “Serving our community, being the hands and feet of Jesus Christ, and sharing delicious food—it doesn’t get better than that.”

Walking into Swheat Market is like coming home. The atmosphere is a reflection of their values: faith-centered, family-owned, and fiercely committed to hospitality. Whether a regular grabbing their usual or a traveler passing through for the first time, everyone is greeted with genuine Southern kindness. “When you step into our restaurant, you’re not just another guest—you’re part of our family,” Chloe said. “We’ve created a space that’s filled with warmth, love, and a sense of community.”

What sets Swheat Market apart is the food. Known for its high-quality ingredients and freshly made dishes, the menu is a mix of longtime favorites and personal go-tos. The Corned Beef Reuben, Roast Beef & Provolone, and Dan’s Brisket are so well-loved that people travel from out of state just to get a taste. “Our personal favorite is the Turkey and Swiss or Ham and Cheddar Sandwich,” said Tillery. “And on those hot summer days, the Fall Salad really hits the spot!”

Owning a business in their hometown brings a sense of fulfillment that the cousins don’t take for granted. “There’s something special about serving the people who have watched you grow,” Chloe shared. “It’s a full-circle moment for us. We are so blessed to have such a supportive community—we couldn’t do it without them.”

Both Tillery and Chloe credit their time at Jax State with laying the foundation for their business journey. From academic challenges to leadership roles, their college experience helped shape the women they are today. “Jacksonville State gave us the chance to explore, lead, and build relationships that would last a lifetime,” Chloe says. “It taught us how to adapt, how to lead, and how to believe in ourselves.”

Tillery added, “JSU was more than just where I earned a degree—it’s where I met my husband, formed lifelong friendships, and grew in faith. We were involved in FCA, athletics, and Greek life. Everything we experienced there molded us into the people—and businesswomen—we are today.”

Their message to other Gamecocks dreaming of starting their own ventures? Stay true to your calling. – “Believe in your vision and stay confident, even when challenges arise,” urged Chloe. “Surround yourself with people who lift you up, and trust in God. That faith and drive will keep you moving forward.”
