UPD Announces New Parking Appeal Procedures

The University Police Department now accepts parking citation appeals online at police.jsu.edu. The parking appeal form can be located at police.jsu.edu/parkingappeal.html.   Once the parking appeal form is successfully completed, it will be submitted to the parking service division at UPD.  Once the appeal is processed, an e-mail confirmation will be generated that will contain the status of the appeal.  If the appeal is accepted the confirmation e-mail will also reflect the court date, time, and location of the next appeals court.  MORE >>>

Mimosa Yearbook Sale

The 2004 Mimosa yearbooks are here! They will be on sale on the second floor of the Theron Montgomery Building October 4th through October 8th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The cost will be $10. The 2002 and 2003 Mimosa will also be on sale for $5. All sales after the 8th will be done from the Mimosa office in Self Hall. The Mimosa staff encourages all JSU students, faculty, and staff to purchase this wonderful book at a very minimal cost. Kappa Delta Pi Induction Nov. 7

Induction for Kappa Delta Pi, an educational honor society, will be on Sunday, November 7, 2004 at the Baptist Campus Ministries Building beginning at 2:00 p.m. If you have completed or are currently enrolled in 3 educational courses and have a 3.5 GPA or higher, then you meet the eligibility requirements for KDP. Menu of the Day - Jack Hopper Cafeteria

Sodexho Services is currently in the process of realigning their kitchen management which entails a new menu program under the direction of a new manager. Thus, a discrepancy has occurred in the recent menu listings posted on this site. This feature listing the daily menu at Jack Hopper Cafeteria will be suspended until the new management program is in place.

JSU University/Community Orchestra Fall Concert November 19

The Jacksonville State University/Community Orchestra will perform its Fall Concert on Friday, November 19, at 7 p.m. in the Performance Center of Mason Hall. The concert, which is a part of the Alabama Honor Strings Festival sponsored by the Walters Department of Music and the Alabama State Chapter of the American String Teachers' Association, will feature the music of Beethoven, Mozart, and Weber.   MORE >>>

Alabama Honor Strings Festival November 18-21

The Walters Department of Music and the Alabama Chapter of the American String Teachers' Association will host the Alabama Honor Strings Festival and the Alabama ASTA Solo and Ensemble Contest on November 18-21, 2004. The events will take place in Mason Hall on the JSU campus. String students and teachers from throughout the state of Alabama will be on campus during these days.   MORE >>>

Alabama Honor Strings Concert November 21

The orchestras of the Alabama Honor Strings Festival will present a free performance at 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 21, in the Performance Center of Mason Hall. The concert will be the culmination of the Alabama Honor Strings Festival, sponsored by the Walters Department of Music and the Alabama State Chapter of the American String Teachers' Association, and held on the JSU campus November 18-21.   MORE >>>

Guided Archaeology Tour of Calhoun and St. Clair Counties Oct. 9

Come along with JSU's Harry Holstein for a guided archaeology tour of various sites throughout Calhoun and St. Clair counties on Saturday, October 9 beginning at 9:00 a.m. We will visit Janney Iron Furnace, a 19th century battlefield and river locks, a prehistoric Indian village, and much more. JSU Theatre Season Opens Oct. 7

The 2004-2005 JSU Theatre Season opens on October 7th with a classic Shakespearian comedy, As You Like It. The production will run October 7th, 8th, 9th, and 11th at 7:00 p.m. and October 10th at 2:00 p.m. at the Mainstage, Ernest Stone Performing Arts Center. The Student Government Association now has their own E-mail address "sga@jsu.edu." All JSU Students and Faculty and Staff are encouraged to utilize this addition to the SGA. Capital Campaign Update

At President Meehan’s universitywide meeting held on August 30, faculty and staff were challenged to support the Capital Campaign with 100% participation.  Today we are happy to announce that the campaign office has received more than 113 pledges and one-time gifts totaling more than $198,500.   This is obviously a wonderful start to the campaign.   MORE >>>

Art Exhibition featuring Artist Lee Manners Oct. 5

The next scheduled exhibit in the JSU art gallery will feature the great work of one of our own former art professors and department head, Lee Manners, Professor emeritus. His work has been sold and shown in many areas throughout the south. The opening reception for this exhibition will be held on October 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hammond Hall Art Gallery. New National Fraternity Coming to JSU

Thursday, September 23, 2004 starts a new era at Jacksonville State University. Sigma Pi Fraternity will arrive on campus for the first time. Executive office representatives from this nationally recognized fraternity will be moving to Jacksonville for a number of weeks to begin the colonizing process. Sigma Pi Fraternity was selected among the 64 North American Interfraternity Conference organizations to be the next new social fraternity at Jacksonville State University. An Interfraternity Council (IFC) Expansion Committee, consisting of JSU sorority and fraternity members, faculty, and staff, served as the selection board.  MORE >>>

Five Outstanding Alumni Tapped for Awards at Homecoming Nov. 6

The Jacksonville State University Alumni Association will present its annual Outstanding Alumni Awards during halftime ceremonies of the 4 p.m. Homecoming game with Samford on Saturday 6 November at Paul Snow Stadium. The honorees this year are Dr. Bobby H. Welch, Alumnus of the Year; Mr. Ben Cunningham, Young Alumnus of the Year; Dr. George R. Hedden Love Uncovered Again 30 Years After Campus Romance

The mid-1960s were a magical time for Sharron Herman and Don Hedden. As students at Jacksonville State University, each led a storybook campus life. He played football and she marched with the Ballerinas. They dated in a borrowed car and danced on Wednesday nights at Leone Cole Auditorium to the live performances of Little Anthony and the Imperials, Otis Redding, the Temptations and the Four Tops. They were young, in love and looked forward to a happy marriage after graduation.   MORE >>>

Multicultural Services Requests Aid for Hurricane Ivan Victims

The Multicultural Services Office announces the NAACP is asking for donations for the victims of hurricane Ivan. Among items requested for donation are clothing, canned goods, and personal hygiene items. Bring these items to the Theron Montgomery Building where they will be collected on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors. Evening of Fun with Raptors at DeSoto State Park

Join Little River Canyon Field School Director Pete Conroy for an evening of fun with raptors.  Hear stories about owls, hawks, and falcons.  Learn to hoot, screech, and whistle.  Meet some of Alabama's impressive birds of prey, up-close and personal. The event will be held at 7 p.m. on 9 October at the DeSoto State Park campfire circle. Admission is free.

Alabama Ghost Lore at Cheaha with Renee Morrison Oct. 9

Join Jacksonville State University Field School Coordinator Renee Morrison for a fun night of spine-tingling and deliciously frightening Alabama ghost lore, tales  such as The Snake Charmer of Old Davis Town, Shape Shifters of Choccolocco Valley, Ghost Dogs of Cheaha Mountain, and Handwriting on the Dusty Mirror. New Position Will Help JSU Students Find Better Jobs

A full-time position added to Jacksonville State University’s Department of Career Placement Services will help students find quality jobs or improve their chances to obtain co-op job opportunities. Sarah Aultman, who has served as a graduate assistant for the past year, has been hired as the new cooperative education coordinator. Coupled with the announcement is the department’s release of its highest number of state placements, which is up to 32 during the first two quarters of 2004. The number in the area of co-operative education is up to 40 for the fall semester 2004.   MORE >>>

Comments Welcomed for JSU Stylebook

The Division of Institutional Advancement has created a draft style and usage guide, which will be considered for adoption for JSU. The purpose of the guide is to help improve university publications and other communications, electronic and print. It is available at http://www.jsu.edu/news/jsustylebook/index.html, and all comments will be appreciated. The guide is based on the fifteenth edition of The Chicago Manual of Style and contains more than a hundred of the most common mistakes found in JSU publications and other communications.

Kappa Alpha Order Seeking New Members

The gentlemen of the Kappa Alpha Order are continuously striving to reach excellence here at JSU, but in order to keep our traditions fervent we are continuously searching for future members. Our organization's core beliefs and values are the driving force behind our men of character and are what makes us the leaders of tomorrow. In recent years we have had brothers with presidential offices in the Interfraternity Council and the Student Government Association, along with other various executive student offices throughout the university. PEEHIP Card Conversion

The new Federal privacy guidelines for all health plans required transitioning to non-Social Security Numbers for each participant's contract number. In the process of making this transition this past weekend for the PEEHIP, Blue Cross encountered a significant "slowing" in this process due to the extremely large number of members in the PEEHIP group. This problem occurred only in the drug claims processor.   MORE >>>

Print Shop Announces Slight Increase in Prices

Due to the costs of replacing outdated equipment and an increase in the cost of paper and other supplies, the Print Shop has announced a small increase in prices effective October 1. Advance notice of the change is being given to provide time for campus offices to adjust their printing budgets for the fall. This marks the first increase in several years. MORE>>>


JSU's 2004-05 Drama Season Tickets on Sale

Season passes are are on sale for Jacksonville State University's 2004-05 drama season. Five family-friendly shows are scheduled. They are Shakespeare's As You Like It; Ibsen's A Doll's House; a musical by Holmes, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which is based on an unfinished novel by Charles Dickens; a new play, Heroes by Muschell, winner of the 2004 Southern Playwright's Competition; and a comic fantasy, On the Verge, or the Geography of Yearning.  A season pass includes one ticket to each of the above plays.  Cost of the passes are as follows:  Adults, $34.00; senior citizens and JSU personnel, $29.00; students and military, $24.00.  Passes may be purchased by calling 256-782-5648.  Mastercard, Visa, and Discover are accepted.

Author Barbara Moss to Speak Oct. 28

Former Jacksonville State University student Barbara Robinette Moss will be among three authors speaking at the Public Library of Anniston-Calhoun County's Accent on the Authors series luncheon on 28 October, which will launch the book tour for Ms. Moss's latest book Fierce. Ms. Moss' previous book, a memoir called Change Me into Zeus's Daughter, won several state and national awards, including the 2002 Alabama Author Award. The book told of her childhood in Anniston and of struggling with poverty and a facial abnormality. Fierce chronicles her life as a single mother trying to establish her career in art and overcome an emotionally painful past. MORE >>>

JSUCO Concerto and Aria Competition Nov. 3

The Jacksonville State University/Community Orchestra is pleased to announce the third annual JSUCO Concerto and Aria Competition, open to students ages 12-25 who reside in Northeast Alabama. Registered students of JSU shall be considered residents of Northeast Alabama. New Jobs for JSU Students

Ten JSU students were recently hired into Fall co-op positions with Choice Fabricators, Inc. Two students are from the College of Business and eight are from the College of Technology. Job opportunities will range from Human Resources to Robotics and Quality Control. Choice Fabricators was established in Attalla, AL in 1981 and has grown to over 300 employees. They remain a privately owned company with customers that include Emerson Electric, General Electric, Maytag, and Whirlpool. Montana Rockies Rail Tour Sponsored by JSU Alumni Office

The Alumni Office is offering the Montana Rockies rail tour — three days’ travel on board a steam locomotive during a fall foliage trip 9 – 15 October 2004. The package includes a welcome orientation, six nights' lodging, travel on the train — including daily onboard lunch, guides and narrators, continental breakfasts and non-alcoholic beverages. Photo opportunities will include the historic Livingston Depot Center; Cody, Wyoming; Buffalo Bill Historical Center; and Yellowstone National Park with lunch at Old Faithful Inn. The price per person depends on accommodations: double–$1950, single–$2350. Price includes the excursion and round-trip airfare from Atlanta, Georgia.
