Capital Campaign Update

At President Meehan’s universitywide meeting held on August 30, faculty and staff were challenged to support the Capital Campaign with 100% participation.  Today we are happy to announce that the campaign office has received more than 113 pledges and one-time gifts totaling more than $198,500.   This is obviously a wonderful start to the campaign.   MORE >>>

Art Exhibition featuring Artist Lee Manners Oct. 5

The next scheduled exhibit in the JSU art gallery will feature the great work of one of our own former art professors and department head, Lee Manners, Professor emeritus. His work has been sold and shown in many areas throughout the south. The opening reception for this exhibition will be held on October 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hammond Hall Art Gallery. 2004 Alabama Archaeology Week Festivals

Dr. Harry Holstein, along with members of the Jacksonville State University Archaeological Resource Laboratory, and local historian Larry Smith will be participating in state festivals during Alabama Archaeology Week. One is scheduled on Saturday, September 25 at Cathedral Caverns; another on Tuesday, September 28 at Sequoyah Caverns; and on October 2 at Jacksonville State University in the field adjacent to Stephenson Hall on Highway 21/Pelham Road.  MORE >>>

New National Fraternity Coming to JSU

Thursday, September 23, 2004 starts a new era at Jacksonville State University. Sigma Pi Fraternity will arrive on campus for the first time. Executive office representatives from this nationally recognized fraternity will be moving to Jacksonville for a number of weeks to begin the colonizing process. Sigma Pi Fraternity was selected among the 64 North American Interfraternity Conference organizations to be the next new social fraternity at Jacksonville State University. An Interfraternity Council (IFC) Expansion Committee, consisting of JSU sorority and fraternity members, faculty, and staff, served as the selection board.  MORE >>>

Five Outstanding Alumni Tapped for Awards at Homecoming Nov. 6

The Jacksonville State University Alumni Association will present its annual Outstanding Alumni Awards during halftime ceremonies of the 4 p.m. Homecoming game with Samford on Saturday 6 November at Paul Snow Stadium. The honorees this year are Dr. Bobby H. Welch, Alumnus of the Year; Mr. Ben Cunningham, Young Alumnus of the Year; Dr. George R. Cline, Outstanding Faculty/Staff; Ms. Jennifer Knight Carmichael, Alumna of the Year; and Col. Rex Forney, Military Alumnus of the Year.   MORE >>>

Hedden Love Uncovered Again 30 Years After Campus Romance

The mid-1960s were a magical time for Sharron Herman and Don Hedden. As students at Jacksonville State University, each led a storybook campus life. He played football and she marched with the Ballerinas. They dated in a borrowed car and danced on Wednesday nights at Leone Cole Auditorium to the live performances of Little Anthony and the Imperials, Otis Redding, the Temptations and the Four Tops. They were young, in love and looked forward to a happy marriage after graduation.   MORE >>>

Multicultural Services Requests Aid for Hurricane Ivan Victims

The Multicultural Services Office announces the NAACP is asking for donations for the victims of hurricane Ivan. Among items requested for donation are clothing, canned goods, and personal hygiene items. Bring these items to the Theron Montgomery Building where they will be collected on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors. Evening of Fun with Raptors at DeSoto State Park

Join Little River Canyon Field School Director Pete Conroy for an evening of fun with raptors.  Hear stories about owls, hawks, and falcons.  Learn to hoot, screech, and whistle.  Meet some of Alabama's impressive birds of prey, up-close and personal. The event will be held at 7 p.m. on 9 October at the DeSoto State Park campfire circle. Admission is free.

Alabama Ghost Lore at Cheaha with Renee Morrison Oct. 9

Join Jacksonville State University Field School Coordinator Renee Morrison for a fun night of spine-tingling and deliciously frightening Alabama ghost lore, tales  such as The Snake Charmer of Old Davis Town, Shape Shifters of Choccolocco Valley, Ghost Dogs of Cheaha Mountain, and Handwriting on the Dusty Mirror. New Position Will Help JSU Students Find Better Jobs

A full-time position added to Jacksonville State University’s Department of Career Placement Services will help students find quality jobs or improve their chances to obtain co-op job opportunities. Sarah Aultman, who has served as a graduate assistant for the past year, has been hired as the new cooperative education coordinator. Coupled with the announcement is the department’s release of its highest number of state placements, which is up to 32 during the first two quarters of 2004. The number in the area of co-operative education is up to 40 for the fall semester 2004.   MORE >>>

LRCFS's Drum Circle Event at DeSoto State Park Oct. 2

The JSU Field School is hosting a Drum Circle: Rhythm Round the World! program on Saturday, 2 October 2004, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the DeSoto State Park Campfire Circle. Go on a "round the world" musical adventure with Rachel Smart from the Anniston Museum of Natural History and Renee Morrison from the JSU Field School in this hands-on interactive demonstration of multi-cultural percussion instruments ranging from Native American drums to Asian gongs to Middle Eastern tambourines. Katie Koestner to Speak about Date-Rape Sept. 29

An outspoken, nationally known date-rape survivor and sexual assault prevention advocate will speak at Jacksonville State University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday 29 September 2004 in the third floor auditorium of Theron Montgomery Building.  Katie Koestner, who appeared on the 3 June 1991 cover of Time magazine, will talk about her experience with date-rape.  Koestner has received national attention for speaking out against this crime of silence.  In 1993 Koestner completed a project with HBO, a Lifestories Docudrama entitled No Visible Bruises:  The Katie Koestner Story.  MORE >>>

Comments Welcomed for JSU Stylebook

The Division of Institutional Advancement has created a draft style and usage guide, which will be considered for adoption for JSU. The purpose of the guide is to help improve university publications and other communications, electronic and print. It is available at http://www.jsu.edu/news/jsustylebook/index.html, and all comments will be appreciated. The guide is based on the fifteenth edition of The Chicago Manual of Style and contains more than a hundred of the most common mistakes found in JSU publications and other communications.

Kappa Alpha Order Seeking New Members

The gentlemen of the Kappa Alpha Order are continuously striving to reach excellence here at JSU, but in order to keep our traditions fervent we are continuously searching for future members. Our organization's core beliefs and values are the driving force behind our men of character and are what makes us the leaders of tomorrow. In recent years we have had brothers with presidential offices in the Interfraternity Council and the Student Government Association, along with other various executive student offices throughout the university. We are at all times seeking future gentlemen who are in search of a brotherhood based on Christian beliefs and chivalrous respect toward others that provides structure and leadership instruction that continues through his entire life. PEEHIP Card Conversion

The new Federal privacy guidelines for all health plans required transitioning to non-Social Security Numbers for each participant's contract number. In the process of making this transition this past weekend for the PEEHIP, Blue Cross encountered a significant "slowing" in this process due to the extremely large number of members in the PEEHIP group. This problem occurred only in the drug claims processor.   MORE >>>

Print Shop Announces Slight Increase in Prices

Due to the costs of replacing outdated equipment and an increase in the cost of paper and other supplies, the Print Shop has announced a small increase in prices effective October 1. Advance notice of the change is being given to provide time for campus offices to adjust their printing budgets for the fall. This marks the first increase in several years. MORE>>>


JSU's 2004-05 Drama Season Tickets on Sale

Season passes are are on sale for Jacksonville State University's 2004-05 drama season. Five family-friendly shows are scheduled. They are Shakespeare's As You Like It; Ibsen's A Doll's House; a musical by Holmes, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which is based on an unfinished novel by Charles Dickens; a new play, Heroes by Muschell, winner of the 2004 Southern Playwright's Competition; and a comic fantasy, On the Verge, or the Geography of Yearning.  A season pass includes one ticket to each of the above plays.  Cost of the passes are as follows:  Adults, $34.00; senior citizens and JSU personnel, $29.00; students and military, $24.00.  Passes may be purchased by calling 256-782-5648.  Mastercard, Visa, and Discover are accepted.

Author Barbara Moss to Speak Oct. 28

Former Jacksonville State University student Barbara Robinette Moss will be among three authors speaking at the Public Library of Anniston-Calhoun County's Accent on the Authors series luncheon on 28 October, which will launch the book tour for Ms. Moss's latest book Fierce. Ms. Moss' previous book, a memoir called Change Me into Zeus's Daughter, won several state and national awards, including the 2002 Alabama Author Award. The book told of her childhood in Anniston and of struggling with poverty and a facial abnormality. Fierce chronicles her life as a single mother trying to establish her career in art and overcome an emotionally painful past. MORE >>>

JSUCO Concerto and Aria Competition Nov. 3

The Jacksonville State University/Community Orchestra is pleased to announce the third annual JSUCO Concerto and Aria Competition, open to students ages 12-25 who reside in Northeast Alabama. Registered students of JSU shall be considered residents of Northeast Alabama. Auditions will be held on the campus of Jacksonville State University on WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2004, from 6-9 p.m. in the Performance Center of Mason Hall. MORE >>>

Alumni Panel Discussion Sept. 30

Jacksonville State University’s placement office has scheduled several successful Alabamians to serve on a job advice panel scheduled for a public meeting from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday 30 September in Room 101 Merrill Building. Federal Employment Workshop on Sept. 29

Career Placement Services will be hosting a Federal Employment Workshop on Wednesday, September 29th, at the Houston Cole Library beginning at 3:00 p.m. Timothy Grey, the Director of Personnel and Training at the Redstone Arsenal, will be leading the sessions to be held in the Library computer lab. In addition to providing students with valuable information about the benefits of Federal Employment, Mr. Grey will personally assist any students that wish to submit a Federal application online. Students that attend this workshop will have the opportunity to ask specific questions as they access the computers and complete the application process with step-by-step instruction. MORE >>>

New Jobs for JSU Students

Ten JSU students were recently hired into Fall co-op positions with Choice Fabricators, Inc. Two students are from the College of Business and eight are from the College of Technology. Job opportunities will range from Human Resources to Robotics and Quality Control. Choice Fabricators was established in Attalla, AL in 1981 and has grown to over 300 employees. They remain a privately owned company with customers that include Emerson Electric, General Electric, Maytag, and Whirlpool. Montana Rockies Rail Tour Sponsored by JSU Alumni Office

The Alumni Office is offering the Montana Rockies rail tour — three days’ travel on board a steam locomotive during a fall foliage trip 9 – 15 October 2004. The package includes a welcome orientation, six nights' lodging, travel on the train — including daily onboard lunch, guides and narrators, continental breakfasts and non-alcoholic beverages. Photo opportunities will include the historic Livingston Depot Center; Cody, Wyoming; Buffalo Bill Historical Center; and Yellowstone National Park with lunch at Old Faithful Inn. The price per person depends on accommodations: double–$1950, single–$2350. Price includes the excursion and round-trip airfare from Atlanta, Georgia.
