1883

Our First Home. The old Calhoun College building. This building, located on the State Normal School campus, was built by the issuance of stock and valued at $16,000 when the property was given to the State Normal School in 1883.

1884

There are 247 names on the roll book, with 25 pupils in the
normal department.

1885

James G. Ryals, Jr., president, dies on April 18 after a nine-day bout of pneumonia. A few days later the Board of Directors elects J. Harris Chappell to complete Ryals' term.

1886

Lemuel Bishop of Anniston is awarded the very first diploma. Bishop is one
of nine graduates at the first commwncement. In 1966, Bishop's great-grandaughter, Sharon Crowe, a sociology major at JSU, returns
the diploma to the University for safekeeping.

1890

The Budget for the 1890-1891 term is $5,238.24.
