1885James G. Ryals, Jr., president, dies on April 18 after a nine-day bout of pneumonia. A few days later the Board of Directors elects J. Harris Chappell to complete Ryals' term. |

1886Lemuel Bishop of Anniston is awarded the very first diploma. Bishop is oneof nine graduates at the first commwncement. In 1966, Bishop's great-grandaughter, Sharon Crowe, a sociology major at JSU, returns the diploma to the University for safekeeping. |
