ESGR Patriot Award recognizes Lyon's support of White during her deployment and highlights the University's commitment to employees serving in the military
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — When Jacksonville State University Accounting Specialist and Alabama Army National Guard Sergeant Chloe White was called to serve her country, she knew she had the support of her supervisor, University Controller David Lyon, and her colleagues in the Division of Finance and Administration. That support during her nine-month deployment to Poland led White to nominate Lyon for the Patriot Award from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), which was presented during a campus ceremony on Thursday, October 29.
For Lyon, however, the recognition was an opportunity to shine a spotlight on White and her willingness to serve her country.
"I'm honored that Chloe nominated me for this award, but I believe she deserves the recognition for her willingness to serve our country," Lyon said. "Supporting her during her deployment was the least I could do. I see it as my responsibility to make sure she has the support she needs to fulfill her military commitments, and I'm grateful for the sacrifices she and so many others make on our behalf."
Lyon said the close relationships within the Finance Division are an important part of supporting colleagues like White.
“Chloe is more than just a member of our team. She’s part of our family, and we’ll always be here to support her however we can,” Lyon added.
For White, Lyon's support has extended beyond accommodating her military obligations, making a lasting impact on her professional development and her experience balancing two careers.
"I chose to nominate David Lyon for this award not only because of his willingness to accommodate my military duties, but also because of his genuine commitment to supporting me to the best of his ability," White said. "His understanding and support have made a meaningful difference as a young professional trying to make their way in multiple career fields. He has not only been a supportive boss but a great mentor!"
White has served in the Alabama Army National Guard for more than six years and currently holds the rank of sergeant with the 214th Military Police Company. During her nine-month deployment to Poland in 2025–2026, she served as a patrol officer, conducting regular patrols and investigative casework. She also assisted with platoon-level administrative responsibilities and earned a certificate in Advanced Police Administration.
The award was presented by James Dunaway, a volunteer representative of ESGR and military veteran with 40 years of service. Dunaway said White's nomination reflected Lyon's willingness to go above and beyond in supporting her military commitments.
Dunaway also noted that military service often requires commitments extending well beyond the traditional one weekend a month and two weeks a year, making understanding and support from employers especially important.
While Lyon received the award, the recognition also highlighted the collective support of Jax State's Finance Division, something White said made a significant difference during her time away.
"During my deployment, David and others from the Finance area kept in touch with my family and reached out to me directly to check in," White said. "This kept my spirits up on the hard days and made me excited to get back to the friendliest campus in the south!"
