Agreement provides flight training for students in Commercial Aviation concentration
Jacksonville State University has approved a partnership with Sanders Flight Training Center (SFTC), an FAA Part 141 flight school based in Jasper, to provide flight instruction for students pursuing the Commercial Aviation concentration in Jax State’s new Bachelor of Science in Aviation program.
Approved by the Jax State Board of Trustees during Tuesday’s quarterly Board Meeting, the partnership ensures students in the Commercial Aviation track will receive structured, FAA-certified flight training as part of their academic experience, preparing them for careers as professional pilots.
“This partnership with Sanders Flight Training Center represents an important next step in the growth of our Aviation program,” said Jacksonville State University President Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr. “Their long track record in flight training gives our students access to consistent, hands-on instruction and mentorship that builds a strong understanding of aviation, with a clear emphasis on safety and leadership.”
Founded in 1996 by Joseph Gordon “Gordo” Sanders Jr., Sanders Flight Training Center began as a small flight school at the Walker County Airport-Bevill Field and has grown into one of the most respected FAA Part 141 training providers in the region, with additional locations in Tuscaloosa and Huntsville. Jax State students will complete their flight training at the Jasper campus.
“As we continue to grow, it is of utmost importance to continue to provide the highest quality of flight instruction across our region," said Jessica Sanders Walker, President of Sanders Flight Training Center. “Supporting the growth of JSU's aviation program is not simply an investment in one institution; it is an investment in Alabama's economic development, workforce stability, and long-term competitiveness in the aviation sector. This partnership positions us as a vital component in elevating Alabama's aviation education infrastructure and retaining top talent in our state.”
For thirty years, Sanders Flight Training Center has delivered structured, career-focused training for aspiring pilots, military aviators transitioning to commercial aviation, and professional pilots seeking advanced certifications.
“Launching our Aviation program with Sanders Flight Training Center allows us to pair strong academic preparation with high-quality flight training from day one,” said Dr. Christie Shelton, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Their experience brings an important level of structure and industry alignment to the program as we prepare students for careers in aviation.”
Jax State and Sanders Flight Training Center have signed a memorandum of agreement outlining responsibilities, training standards, and collaboration between the university and the flight school to support student success.
Jax State’s Bachelor of Science in Aviation, launching in Fall 2026, prepares students for leadership and operational roles across the aviation industry, with concentrations in Aviation Management, Commercial Aviation, and Public Safety Aviation.
