Ralph BurkeJacksonville State University is mourning the loss of Ralph Burke, a proud Gamecock whose passion for education, public service, and his alma mater left an indelible mark on Northeast Alabama. The University extends its heartfelt condolences to his wife, Joy, and the many family members, friends, and colleagues who mourn his passing.

A native of Rainsville, Burke graduated from Jacksonville State in 1983 with a degree in Physical Education. He continued his education at Jax State, earning both a master’s degree in education administration and an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree. His career reflected his lifelong belief in the power of education and his deep love for his community.

From 1983 to 1998, Burke represented DeKalb County in the Alabama House of Representatives, where he championed educational initiatives and tirelessly supported the people of Northeast Alabama. After leaving the legislature, he continued his service to the region through Jax State, first as Director of JSU Gadsden from 1998 to 2016, and later as Director of Corporate, Foundation and Community Relations until his retirement in 2018. Following his retirement, Burke continued to work for the Office of the President, assisting with community relations efforts in Etowah County.

“Ralph Burke dedicated his life to making Northeast Alabama a better place,” said Jacksonville State President Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr. “He was a proud alumnus and passionate advocate for education, not just at Jax State but across our entire region. More than that, Ralph was a friend to everyone he met. He will be remembered for his warm heart, generous spirit, and unwavering commitment to the communities he served.”

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Burke was deeply engaged in civic life. He served on the Executive Board of Leadership Etowah and chaired the Etowah County Mega Sports Complex Authority. He was also a longtime Board Member for the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, serving from 1994 to 2006.

Though he was deeply rooted in his hometown of Rainsville, his love for both DeKalb and Etowah counties and his enduring connection to Jacksonville State will remain a large part of his legacy. The university community celebrates his life and honors the many ways he helped move Jax State and its surrounding communities forward.

A visitation for Burke will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2025, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Meadowbrook Church, located at 2525 Rainbow Drive in Gadsden. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m.
