04/24/2025

Jacksonville State University recently hosted a ceremony to unveil a new painting. Angle Hall, commissioned by the Horsfield family to honor the legacy of Dr. Christopher H. Horsfield. A respected faculty member and administrator, Dr. Horsfield dedicated more than three decades to the university, beginning in 1966 as head of the Department of Mathematics and retiring in 1998 as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

The artwork was created by Jax State alumnus Severe Threats, whose personal journey as an artist began through the university’s “On to JSU” initiative. As a graduate of the Jax State program, Threats has developed a distinctive style rooted in personal narrative and campus tradition. His selection for this project reflects not only his talent but also his deep connection to the university. His painting of Angle Hall captures both the physical presence of one of the university’s most iconic buildings and the symbolic weight of a lifetime of academic service.

The Horsfield family chose to honor Dr. Horsfield’s memory through a work of art that reflects his commitment to education and the university community. Dr. Horsfield encouraged his students to learn the basics. Building on those basics was the key to understanding. Angle Hall serves as the foundation for the university.

The family’s ties to Jax State are longstanding and deeply personal. Dorothy Horsfield, his wife, is a two-time alumna, having earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education in 1965 and a Bachelor of Arts in 1966. Dr. Horsfield’s daughter, Emily Horsfield White, currently serves as Jacksonville State's registrar. She holds a Master of Science in Education in Social Sciences (1995), a Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Studies (2021), and a Master of Science in Instructional Technology (2023). His son, Michael Horsfield, graduated from Jax State in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. Michael’s wife, Melisa Horsfield, is also a graduate, having earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1991. He was the proud grandfather of three:  Andrew Horsfield, Christopher White, and Chloe White.  Two of which have also earned Bachelor of Science degrees at Jax State: Christopher White (2020) and Chloe White (2024).

Angle Hall now hangs in the Executive Conference Room in Angle Hall as a tribute not only to the career of a devoted educator but also to a family whose commitment to Jacksonville State spans generations. It reflects the values that define the university and the individuals who continue to shape its legacy.
