Jacksonville State Mourns the Passing of Former MCIS Department Head Dr. Fred Kelley

Jacksonville State University mourns the passing of Dr. Fred Kelley, who served as Head of the Department of Mathematical, Computing, & Information Sciences (MCIS) from 2008 until 2012. Dr. Kelley began his tenure at Jax State in 1990 and taught various mathematics and computer science courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels for 20 years before his retirement and then for five more as an adjunct professor. 

Dr. Kelley, a dedicated educator with a passion for mathematics, built an exceptional career across multiple institutions, including Samford University, Enterprise State, Jefferson State and his beloved Jax State. His impact on students and colleagues will be remembered fondly.

Born on August 9, 1946, Dr. Kelley earned his Ph.D. from the University of Alabama and dedicated his life to nurturing a love for mathematics in his students. Throughout his tenure at Jax State, he was known for his commitment to academic excellence and his leadership within the MCIS Department.

The Jax State community extends its deepest condolences to the Kelley family and his former students and colleagues during this time of loss. Dr. Kelley’s legacy of service and education will not be forgotten.
