JSU’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) hosted its first Small Business Campaign Competition this spring.

Two teams of PRSSA students worked on a campaign to increase digital exposure and brand awareness for Apple Defense Solutions (ADS), a safety awareness business located in Jacksonville, Ala. Throughout the semester, the students met with the owner of ADS, Paul Apple, for mentorship and consultation. Both teams developed logo designs, flyers and social media content for his business.

All students who participated in the competition received gift cards and certificates for safety courses hosted by ADS, while the winning team was awarded registration in an additional four-hour safety course. But the true reward was earning work samples for their professional portfolios.

PRSSA partnered with its professional advisor, JSU alumna Cristina Almanza, and the university’s Small Business Development Center to coordinate with ADS. Faculty advisor, Dr. Breann Murphy, said the chapter hopes to bring the competition back next academic year.

Housed in the Department of Communication, PRSSA is a student-led professional public relations organization open to all majors interested in learning more about public relations and networking with professionals in the field.
