Spirit on Mountain Street Set for Aug. 27

Eat! Give! Cheer! The City of Jacksonville and Jacksonville State University are excited to present the 10th annual Spirit on Mountain Street festival on Thursday, August 27, at 6 p.m. outside the main entrance to the JSU Stadium. Admission is $1 and proceeds benefit the Jacksonville Christian Outreach Center, a charitable organization that supports the city’s needy. 

More than 30 local restaurants will be on hand to provide food samples from popular menu items. Children activities, sponsored by the Jacksonville Exchange Club and the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, will include a dunking booth, face-painting, bounce houses and more. There will also be a cake auction, hotdog eating contest sponsored by Sonic, a silent auction and door prizes. Food tastings and activities cost $1 per ticket, available at the gate.

At 7:30 p.m., the Kitty Stone Singers will perform the National Anthem prior to a community pep rally kicking off the 2015 school year including students from Jacksonville High School, Pleasant Valley High School, Jacksonville Christian Academy and JSU. The Marching Southerners will be in the stadium practicing prior to the pep rally, treating guests to tunes from their 2015 halftime show.

“Spirit on Mountain Street has been a great event for not only the City of Jacksonville but the surrounding area,” said Jacksonville Major Johnny Smith. “It is an enjoyable night for the community and, through JCOC, supports those in need the whole year through.” 

Spirit on Mountain Street kicks off a weekend of community activities on JSU’s campus, including: 

  • Friday, August 28, 5 p.m. - JSU Gamecock football scrimmage game on Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium 
  • SaturdayAugust 29, 4-6 p.m. - Gamecock Fan Day at Stephenson Gym 
  • SaturdayAugust 29, 6 p.m. - Free concert by country music star Kellie Pickler sponsored by F&M Bank on Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium
