JSU Offers Summer Fun for Local Youth

In the words of Alice Cooper, “School’s Out for Summer!” As the final bell of the 2014-2015 school year rings out, thousands of local kids will jump headfirst into the freedom and relaxation of summer vacation. But in a matter of weeks, “I’m bored!” and “There’s nothing to do!” will echo through area homes. Need to get the kids off the couch this summer? Jacksonville State University is hosting a variety of educational and athletic camps in June and July to keep them active during the dog days of summer.
Drama Camp
June 15-19, 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Stone Center for the Performing Arts
Kids ages 6-13 are invited to express their creativity at JSU Drama’s annual theater camp. Assistant Professor Caroline Price and JSU Drama students will guide campers through theater games, movement and vocal work, and acting exercises. The week will culminate into a theatrical production created, scripted and performed by the campers. The $125 camp fee includes all instruction, daily snacks and a t-shirt. Canyon Camp for Children at Little River Canyon Center
June 23-26, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Little River Canyon
Ages 6-9
Fee: $100
Drop off and pick up at the Canyon Center daily Hands-on environmental education, outdoor fun, arts, and exploration of the natural world abound at this camp. Children will learn all about Little River Canyon and DeSoto State Park – the river, the plants and the animals! Fee includes lunch and supplies. Tentative: Shuttle available from JSU, leaving at 9 a.m. and returning at 4 p.m. Hands-on arts and exploration of cultural heritage abound at this camp. Children will learn all about the diverse cultures that have shaped Northeast Alabama including Native Americans, Spanish Americans and African Americans. Fee includes lunch and supplies.
