Homecoming 2004 Door Decorating Contest

The SGA is sponsoring the Faculty/Staff Door Decorating Contest once again for Homecoming 2004. With the theme "Surfin' JSU" to work with, JSU faculty and staff have come up with some very creative entries. Doors will be judged Friday, 5 November, after lunch. Rachel Townson Crowned Miss Homecoming

The traditional Homecoming bonfire sponsored by SGA was held at Paul Carpenter Field Thursday, October 4, at 8 p.m. Results of this year's Homecoming Queen election were announced. The new Homecoming Queen for Homecoming 2004 is Rachel Townson (photo by Alex Stillwagon/JSU). Rachel is sponsored by Kappa Alpha Order and is a member of the Phi Mu fraternity. She is also the Mimosa Athletics Editor. She is a senior majoring in Physical Education. Her parents are Rick and Lynn Townson of Cleveland, AL. Members of this year's court include Brooke Davis, sponsored by Pi Kappa Phi fraternity; Allison Land, sponsored by Pi Kappa Phi fraternity; Bryanna Nicole Nelms, sponsored by Delta Zeta sorority; and Abbie Lauren Wilbanks, sponsored by Phi Mu fraternity. Registration for Spring Semester 2005

It is time to register for classes for the spring semester 2005. Registration by telephone and internet only continues through Friday, November 5. Priority pre-registration begins on Monday November 8 at 8:00 a.m. At that time students may register on the telephone, on the internet or by going to the department of their major. Students must see their advisor prior to registering for classes. Registration will remain open until December 7. Tuition for students who pre-register is due by December 7.

JSU Soccer in Semifinals of OVC Tournament Nov. 5

Attention all JSU Students: JSU Soccer plays at Samford Friday, November 5, 2004 in the Semi Finals of the OVC Tournament at 7:00 p.m. All JSU students will get in free with their student ID. Go Support our Gamecocks!

Landscaping with Native Plants Workshop Nov. 13

Help us continue the progress on the DeSoto Native Plant Garden. We’ll evaluate the success of the garden over the last year, brainstorm with area gardeners about future directions, and then continue planting. This is a hands-on workshop with planning and discussion in the morning, a break for lunch, and then planting and garden maintenance in the afternoon. MORE >>>

CSEPP Training Session

The University Police Department will be conducting Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Plan (CSEPP) training on November 12, 2004. The training for all buildings on the east side of campus will begin at 3:00 p.m. and will last until 4:30 p.m. MORE >>>

Beware of Internet Fraud

University students, faculty, and staff are currently being targeted by an internet “fishing scam”. Hackers are targeting university internet users by posing as legitimate businesses. Hackers are contacting internet users via e-mail posing as financial institutions or prominent businesses. In the e-mail to the internet user, the hacker requests that the recipient update their financial information online. The hackers use the information from the e-mail to draft financial assets and to set up fraudulent checks and credit cards. MORE >>>

Dr. Glenn Roswal Recognized by Camp ASCCA

Each year an individual who has devoted a lifetime of service to Camp ASCCA is recognized with the Hoyt Webb Award. Named in honor of the founder of Camp ASCCA, the Hoyt Webb Award is the camp's most prestigious award and each year is bestowed upon one of its most dedicated supporters. Dr Glenn Roswal, professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at Jacksonville State University, is Camp ASCCA’s 2004 Hoyt Webb Award recipient. MORE >>>

Kappa Delta Pi Induction Ceremony Nov. 7

All Education students interested in joining Kappa Delta Pi should have their applications turned in immediately. We will accept applications until Nov. 3. The induction ceremony is Nov. 7 at the Baptist Campus Ministries Building beginning at 2:00 p.m. You must have a 3.5 GPA or higher and have completed or be currently enrolled in at least three Education courses. The dues are $65. This should be returned with the application. Applications can be found in the Ramona Wood building or by contacting Jessica Bentley at jsu2924b@student-mail.jsu.edu. Go Gamecocks!

Riverboat Dinner Cruise Dec. 4

The Alumni Office is offering a holiday dinner cruise on the Tennessee River aboard the Southern Belle out of Chattanooga, Saturday, December 4, boarding at 4:30 p.m. and sailing at 5. (dock at 7 p.m.) Dinner includes a full buffet including prime rib for $37.50 per person (tax included). A cash bar is available. There will be a band and dance floor, caroling, Christmas lights on board and along the river and, of course Santa Claus! Limited seating. Busy Student Writes Novel between Classes

A Jacksonville State University student who found himself too busy to pursue writing on a regular schedule completed his first published novel during spare time between classes. James Matthew Byers of Rainbow City is now busy with signings and other promotional efforts for Grecian Rune (PublishAmerica, 313 pages, November 2004), a fantasy tale set in Greece, Crete, China, and Egypt that tells the story of a collection of heroes, gods, and goddesses who joined forces to overcome evil. Bachelor Beauties Pageant Nov. 10

Alpha Xi Delta presents their annual Bachelor Beauties womanless beauty pageant! It will be held in Leone Cole Auditorium on November 10th at 7:30 p.m. This is a fund raiser for Alpha Xi Delta and the admission charge is $2.00. For more information contact Jenny Wentworth, 435-5152.

UPD Steps Up Decal Enforcement

The University Police Department is increasing their efforts to get everyone at JSU to register their vehicles. Officers have been forced to boot 14 vehicles in the last three weeks. Many students have failed to register for their decal this semester.  In an effort to motivate students to register their vehicles, the Chanticleer will begin printing the names of persons who are booted each week.  To avoid having your name on the boot list, register your vehicle online at police.jsu.edu. Art Faculty Exhibition Nov. 2–23

Jacksonville State University's art department is presenting a faculty exhibition of works beginning with an opening reception Tuesday, November 2 from 7 to 9 p.m. The exhibition continues through November 23 in the Hammond Hall Gallery. Admission is free. MORE >>>

Stephenson Hall Weight Room

The Recreational Sports Department is happy to announce the purchase of new Cybex Weight Equipment. However, the weight room will be closed for a week for the transition of moving out the old equipment, replacing the carpet and installing the new equipment. We appreciate your patience. The weight room will close Monday, October 25 at 4:00 p.m. We hope to have the new equipment in place and ready to reopen by Monday, November 1.

HR Memo - JSU's Flexible Benefit Plan

Once per year you may enroll in or modify your election in JSU's Flexible Benefit Plan. As you know, this plan will allow PEEHIP insurance premiums and payroll deductions for medical reimbursement of certain health care expenses and dependent care benefits to be paid with pretax dollars. By doing this, you may save federal, state, and FICA tax on your premium payments, medical reimbursement, and/or dependent care deductions. MORE >>>

Jacksonville Brass Quintet to Perform at Museum Nov. 7

JSU's resident faculty brass ensemble, the Jacksonville Brass Quintet, will perform at the Anniston Museum of Natural History on Sunday, November 7 at 3 p.m. as a part of the 20th Anniversary season of Music at the Museum. The group consists of Dr. John Merriman and Dr. Chip Crotts, trumpets, Mr. Jeff Soloman, horn, Dr. Jim Roberts, trombone, and Mr. Chris Hosmer, tuba. They will present music ranging from the 17th century to the 20th centuries including both transcribed and original works. MORE >>>

Trustees Pass 4% Pay Raise

We are pleased to announce that the board of trustees approved a 4% salary increase for university faculty and staff hired prior to July 1, 2004. The increase will be effective as of October 1, 2004 and will therefore be reflected in the November 1 paycheck for monthly employees. For bi-weekly employees, the raise will be reflected in the October 26 paycheck, which will include a “catch-up” from October 1. Employees hired on or after July 1 are not eligible unless their current rate of pay falls below the minimum for their range or step. In such cases, individual’s pay will be brought up to the minimum of the range.

Wellness Center Offers Cholesterol Screenings

The Wellness Center is continuing to offer Cholesterol Screenings (Lipid Profiles) to all JSU Faculty, Staff, their dependents and Retirees on Tuesdays during the Fall Semester. All screenings are conducted in the Wellness Center (204 A Pete Mathews Coliseum). The screening is quick and easy and requires approximately 5 minutes of your time. MORE >>>

Zeta Tau Alpha Campaign for Breast Cancer Research

Zeta Tau Alpha and Yoplait are teaming up in an effort to raise 2.1 million dollars for breast cancer research. For every yogurt lid, 10 cents will go to help find a cure for breast cancer. A box for the lids will be placed on the 2nd floor of TMB. Lids will be collected now through the end of December.

Christmas Trip Offered By Alumni Office

University/Community Orchestra Fall Concert Nov. 19

The Jacksonville State University/Community Orchestra will perform its Fall Concert on Friday, November 19, at 7 p.m. in the Performance Center of Mason Hall. The concert, which is a part of the Alabama Honor Strings Festival sponsored by the Walters Department of Music and the Alabama State Chapter of the American String Teachers' Association, will feature the music of Beethoven, Mozart, and Weber.   MORE >>>

Alabama Honor Strings Festival November 18-21

The David Walters Department of Music and the Alabama Chapter of the American String Teachers' Association will host the Alabama Honor Strings Festival and the Alabama ASTA Solo and Ensemble Contest on November 18-21, 2004. The events will take place in Mason Hall on the JSU campus. String students and teachers from throughout the state of Alabama will be on campus during these days.   MORE >>>

JSU's 2004-05 Drama Season Tickets on Sale

Season passes are are on sale for Jacksonville State University's 2004-05 drama season. Five family-friendly shows are scheduled. They are Shakespeare's As You Like It; Ibsen's A Doll's House; a musical by Holmes, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which is based on an unfinished novel by Charles Dickens; a new play, Heroes by Muschell, winner of the 2004 Southern Playwright's Competition; and a comic fantasy, On the Verge, or the Geography of Yearning.  A season pass includes one ticket to each of the above plays.  Cost of the passes are as follows:  Adults, $34.00; senior citizens and JSU personnel, $29.00; students and military, $24.00.  Passes may be purchased by calling 256-782-5648.  Mastercard, Visa, and Discover are accepted.

Christmas Tour Arranged by Alumni Office

This 2004 Christmas Spectacular Tour includes a Music Road Hotel stay December 10-12, Dollywood with its Holiday Feast Buffet, Christmas in the Smokies Show, Christmas with the Kingdom Heirs Show, Dolly's Christmas Chapel, Heartsong show, Twas the Night Before Christmas Show, Parade of Lights, O' Holly Night Show, Carole of the Trees, Victorian Melodies Show, Appalachian Christmas Show, Indoor Christmas European Market, Old World Arts Crafts & Ornaments, Holiday breads and pastries; Outlet shopping; dinner at Old Mill Restaurant; Louise Mandrell Theatre Show.
