New Position Will Help JSU Students Find Better Jobs

A full-time position added to Jacksonville State University’s Department of Career Placement Services will help students find quality jobs or improve their chances to obtain co-op job opportunities. Sarah Aultman, who has served as a graduate assistant for the past year, has been hired as the new cooperative education coordinator. Coupled with the announcement is the department’s release of its highest number of state placements, which is up to 32 during the first two quarters of 2004. The number in the area of co-operative education is up to 40 for the fall semester 2004.   MORE >>>

Discounted Tickets to Carousel Available from Alumni Office

The Alumni Office has discounted tickets to Carousel in Concert at the BJCC this Saturday, 25 September at 8 p.m. Tickets are now $17 per person and seats are in the Rear Grand Tier. A bus will leave from the Gamecock Center at 6 p.m. and return after the show.   MORE >>>

Take a Friend/Loved One to the Health Fair Sept. 21

Counseling and Career Services, along with JSU Peer Educators, are sponsoring a "Take a Friend/Loved One to the Health Fair" on September 21, 2004 in TMB — 2nd & 3rd  Floor from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.  The Health Services Center and Calhoun County Mental Health Center will provide HIV/AIDS and depression screening. The RMC Wellness Connection bus will be parked in front of TMB and will be providing free diabetes screening and blood pressure checks. Free chair massages are being provided by Therapeutic Health Massages of Jacksonville. Other participants include JSU Student Health Center, Gold's Gym of Jacksonville, Calhoun County Extension Services and Calhoun County Health Department. Videoseminar on Sexual Misconduct Complaints Sept. 23

An interactive seminar featuring national experts with advice on handling sexual misconduct complaints available through downlinking a videoseminar on "Best Practices of Sexual Misconduct Judicial Training" is being held in the Cole Library Room 1103A Thursday, Sept. 23 beginning at noon. Athletics Dept. to Host Tailgate Pep Rally Party Sept. 24

The Athletics Department will host a tailgate pep rally party at 5 p.m. on 24 September at the parking lot adjacent to the coliseum and the new soccer field before the volleyball game against Tennessee State and the soccer game against Samford, which both begin at 7 p.m.  Both are Ohio Valley Conference games.

Casual Canyon Hikes at Little River Canyon

Enjoy the natural beauty of the Little River Canyon area as summer comes to a close on a series of easy hikes with JSU Geologist, Dr. Kelly Gregg. LRCFS's Drum Circle Event at DeSoto State Park Oct. 2

The JSU Field School is hosting a Drum Circle: Rhythm Round the World! program on Saturday, 2 October 2004, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the DeSoto State Park Campfire Circle. Go on a "round the world" musical adventure with Rachel Smart from the Anniston Museum of Natural History and Renee Morrison from the JSU Field School in this hands-on interactive demonstration of multi-cultural percussion instruments ranging from Native American drums to Asian gongs to Middle Eastern tambourines. Katie Koestner to Speak about Date-Rape Sept. 29

An outspoken, nationally known date-rape survivor and sexual assault prevention advocate will speak at Jacksonville State University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday 29 September 2004 in the third floor auditorium of Theron Montgomery Building.  Katie Koestner, who appeared on the 3 June 1991 cover of Time magazine, will talk about her experience with date-rape.  Koestner has received national attention for speaking out against this crime of silence.  In 1993 Koestner completed a project with HBO, a Lifestories Docudrama entitled No Visible Bruises:  The Katie Koestner Story.  MORE >>>

Student Council for Exceptional Children Meeting Sept. 23

Comments Welcomed for JSU Stylebook

The Division of Institutional Advancement has created a draft style and usage guide, which will be considered for adoption for JSU. The purpose of the guide is to help improve university publications and other communications, electronic and print. It is available at http://www.jsu.edu/news/jsustylebook/index.html, and all comments will be appreciated. The guide is based on the fifteenth edition of The Chicago Manual of Style and contains more than a hundred of the most common mistakes found in JSU publications and other communications.

Kappa Alpha Order Seeking New Members

The gentlemen of the Kappa Alpha Order are continuously striving to reach excellence here at JSU, but in order to keep our traditions fervent we are continuously searching for future members. Our organization's core beliefs and values are the driving force behind our men of character and are what makes us the leaders of tomorrow. In recent years we have had brothers with presidential offices in the Interfraternity Council and the Student Government Association, along with other various executive student offices throughout the university. PEEHIP Card Conversion

The new Federal privacy guidelines for all health plans required transitioning to non-Social Security Numbers for each participant's contract number. In the process of making this transition this past weekend for the PEEHIP, Blue Cross encountered a significant "slowing" in this process due to the extremely large number of members in the PEEHIP group. This problem occurred only in the drug claims processor.   MORE >>>

Print Shop Announces Slight Increase in Prices

Due to the costs of replacing outdated equipment and an increase in the cost of paper and other supplies, the Print Shop has announced a small increase in prices effective October 1. Advance notice of the change is being given to provide time for campus offices to adjust their printing budgets for the fall. This marks the first increase in several years. MORE>>>


JSU's 2004-05 Drama Season Tickets on Sale

Season passes are are on sale for Jacksonville State University's 2004-05 drama season. Five family-friendly shows are scheduled. They are Shakespeare's As You Like It; Ibsen's A Doll's House; a musical by Holmes, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which is based on an unfinished novel by Charles Dickens; a new play, Heroes by Muschell, winner of the 2004 Southern Playwright's Competition; and a comic fantasy, On the Verge, or the Geography of Yearning.  A season pass includes one ticket to each of the above plays.  Cost of the passes are as follows:  Adults, $34.00; senior citizens and JSU personnel, $29.00; students and military, $24.00.  Passes may be purchased by calling 256-782-5648.  Mastercard, Visa, and Discover are accepted.

Author Barbara Moss to Speak Oct. 28

Former Jacksonville State University student Barbara Robinette Moss will be among three authors speaking at the Public Library of Anniston-Calhoun County's Accent on the Authors series luncheon on 28 October, which will launch the book tour for Ms. Moss's latest book Fierce. Ms. Moss' previous book, a memoir called Change Me into Zeus's Daughter, won several state and national awards, including the 2002 Alabama Author Award. The book told of her childhood in Anniston and of struggling with poverty and a facial abnormality. Fierce chronicles her life as a single mother trying to establish her career in art and overcome an emotionally painful past. MORE >>>

JSUCO Concerto and Aria Competition Nov. 3

The Jacksonville State University/Community Orchestra is pleased to announce the third annual JSUCO Concerto and Aria Competition, open to students ages 12-25 who reside in Northeast Alabama. Registered students of JSU shall be considered residents of Northeast Alabama. Jacksonville State University’s placement office has scheduled several successful Alabamians to serve on a job advice panel scheduled for a public meeting from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday 30 September in Room 101 Merrill Building. Federal Employment Workshop on Sept. 29

Career Placement Services will be hosting a Federal Employment Workshop on Wednesday, September 29th, at the Houston Cole Library beginning at 3:00 p.m. Timothy Grey, the Director of Personnel and Training at the Redstone Arsenal, will be leading the sessions to be held in the Library computer lab. In addition to providing students with valuable information about the benefits of Federal Employment, Mr. Grey will personally assist any students that wish to submit a Federal application online. Students that attend this workshop will have the opportunity to ask specific questions as they access the computers and complete the application process with step-by-step instruction. MORE >>>

New Jobs for JSU Students

Ten JSU students were recently hired into Fall co-op positions with Choice Fabricators, Inc. Two students are from the College of Business and eight are from the College of Technology. Job opportunities will range from Human Resources to Robotics and Quality Control. Choice Fabricators was established in Attalla, AL in 1981 and has grown to over 300 employees. They remain a privately owned company with customers that include Emerson Electric, General Electric, Maytag, and Whirlpool. Montana Rockies Rail Tour Sponsored by JSU Alumni Office

The Alumni Office is offering the Montana Rockies rail tour — three days’ travel on board a steam locomotive during a fall foliage trip 9 – 15 October 2004. The package includes a welcome orientation, six nights' lodging, travel on the train — including daily onboard lunch, guides and narrators, continental breakfasts and non-alcoholic beverages. Photo opportunities will include the historic Livingston Depot Center; Cody, Wyoming; Buffalo Bill Historical Center; and Yellowstone National Park with lunch at Old Faithful Inn. The price per person depends on accommodations: double–$1950, single–$2350. Price includes the excursion and round-trip airfare from Atlanta, Georgia.
