Funeral Services Announced for Dr. R. Douglas Peters

Funeral service for Dr. R. Douglas Peters, 69, will be Saturday, April 6, 2013, at 12 p.m. at K.L. Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Center Chapel in Jacksonville with the Rev. Ted Anderson officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. Dr. Peters died Monday, April 1, 2013, at his residence.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Peters, of Jacksonville; one daughter, Denise Michelle Peters and her partner, Donna Smith, of Asheville, N.C.; Ashley Goodman, of Boone, N.C., who was like a daughter to him; one son, David Douglas Peters and his fiancée, Allison Black, of Tallahassee, Fla.; one brother, William Ritchie Peters, of Greensboro, N.C.; and one granddaughter, Aidyn Jayne Peters-Smith.

A native of Durham, N.C., Dr. Peters graduated from Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C., and the University of Georgia. He was a Professor of Clinical Psychology at Jacksonville State University from 1973 to 1998. After his retirement from JSU, he did psychological testing and evaluations for the Department of Human Resources in several counties in Alabama. Dr. Peters was a member of the American Psychological Association, the Alabama Board of Examiners in Psychology, and the Emeriti Faculty at JSU.

Dr. Peters served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and was an avid golfer and sports fan. He had a passion for music which he loved to share with others. He brought joy to many through his generosity and his upbeat personality. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend and colleague who will be greatly missed. Dr. Peters was preceded in death by his parents, William John and Bernice Ritchie Peters; one sister, Susan Peters O'Rear.
