The purpose of the Master of Science with a major in computer systems and software design (MSSD) is to educate a new generation of managers, planners, analysts and programmers in the specification, design and deployment of the next generation of computing and information systems. The program is designed for students with an interest in pursing a career in information technology, either in business, industry, government, non-profit organizations, or in college teaching. It provides students with an applied approach to learning, focusing on factors and issues relevant in contemporary software development. The program emphasizes the methods and processes used in successful software organizations.
In addition to meeting general admission requirements of the College of Graduate Studies, applicants for the MSSD must have the equivalent of an undergraduate degree with a major in computer science, software engineering, or information systems as determined by the graduate computer science faculty. Applicants with degrees in related fields with three to five years experience in systems and software design may be considered. These applicants should have the equivalent of a minor in computer science, including courses equivalent to CS 310, Software Engineering I, CS 491, Software Engineering II, CS 350, Operating Systems, CS 488, Database Systems, either MS 120, Calculus and Its Applications, or MS 125, Calculus I, and demonstrated proficiency in a procedural or object-oriented programming language. Applicants who are deficient in these areas may be required to take additional courses at the graduate and/or undergraduate levels.
The MSSD program provides five available concentrations: high performance and scientific computing, information security and assurance, visualization and image processing, web technologies and development, and general.
