    Blackboard - Additional Software Possibly Needed

    • Microsoft Office 97 or higher - commonly used programs in this suite of applications include Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access.  Free viewers are available in lieu of the full version of the software.
      • MS Power Point 2007 Viewer - View full-featured presentations created in PowerPoint 97 and later versions. (Service Pack 1 is also available for this viewer)
      • MS Word 2007 Viewer - View and print Microsoft Word documents.  This download is a replacement for Word Viewer 2003 and all previous Microsoft Word Viewer versions.
      • MS Excel 2003 Viewer - View and print Excel workbooks.  This download is a replacement for Excel Viewer 97 and all previous Excel Viewer versions.
    • Microsoft Office 2007 Compatibility Pack - Allows users of MS Office 2003 to open MS Office 2007 Word, PowerPoint and Excel files.
    • Firefox 2 - a web browser.  (This links directly to an executable file to download and install Firefox 2 for Windows, English version, onto your computer.  It is no longer supported or updated by Mozilla, but is the only officially approved browser for our current Blackboard version.)
    • Firefox 3 - a web browser.  (This version is not officially compatible with our current version of Blackboard, however most users find it acceptable.  However, there are known issues with Firefox 3.5, so we recommend avoiding that version for now.)
    • Adobe Acrobat Reader - for viewing Adobe Reader (.pdf) files.
    • Windows Media Player or equivalent - for viewing most types of media files.
    • QuickTime plug-in - for viewing .mov or QuickTime media files.
    • Real Player plug-in - for viewing Real Player media files.
    • OpenOffice - a free cross-platform office application suite available for a number of different computer operating systems. It supports the ISO standard OpenDocument Format (ODF) for data interchange as its default file format, as well as Microsoft Office '97�2003 formats, Microsoft Office 2007 format (ability to "open" documents in version 3), among others.
    • Anti-virus software - (Highly recommended for students; Required for instructors.  This is for your own protection and the protection of others.  Online courses involve much file sharing, which increases your risk of computer virus infection. Anti-virus software will help protect your computer in case of exposure to a computer virus.)
    • Other - Please contact the instructor concerning specific software or hardware that may be required for his/her course.
