Harm Reduction Training Offered May 11

Harm Reduction training is being offered by the Health Services Center, Coosa Valley NASW, and the JSU Social Work Program. The training program is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. May 11, on the 11th floor of the Houston Cole Library. Harm Reduction is a set of practical strategies that reduce negative consequences of drug use, incorporating a spectrum of strategies from safer use, to managed use, to abstinence. Harm Reduction strategies meet drug users "where they are at," addressing conditions of use along with the use itself. The training is being offered free of charge. For more information, contact Maureen Newton, JSU Social Work Program at mnewton@jsu.edu or at Ext. 5337.

JSU, Gadsden State to Dedicate Ford Center May 10

Dedication ceremonies are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Monday, May 10, for the Joe M. Ford Center for Economic Development on the East Broad campus of Gadsden State Community College. The center is a partnership between GSCC, Jacksonville State University, and the state. It was established to serve as an education and economic development resource for business, industry, government, and economic developers. The facility also provides educational opportunities to retain, train, and retrain the work force in the Etowah-Calhoun county region. The concept came to fruition following the decision by the Department of Defense to close Fort McClellan; the shutdown of Gulf States Steel and downsizing of other businesses and industries looming in the future. Feature: Atkins Diet Popular at JSU

Jacksonville State University psychology professor Claudia McDade has been eating the Atkins way for the past 30 years, starting when she developed hypoglycemia in her twenties. The diet is a high protein, low carbohydrate, weight-loss program that claims to increase energy, help people lose weight, and eradicate several illnesses. McDade said she feels better on the diet and believes it helps her avoid diabetes. "It's been my preventive," she said. The diet is so popular it apparently inspires criminal behavior, giving new meaning to "let's rustle up some supper."  Several law enforcement officers think it is responsible for cattle rustling.   Rural investigators told The Washington Post in April that cattle theft is on the rise due to low-carb dieters' demand for protein. Oddly, there has been no similar rise in chicken or fish thefts. MORE>>>

Said Mark Jones, "Those of you who knew Reggie can attest to the fact that he was a very strong, loving, caring and special person.  If you would like to make a donation to the fund, just stop by any SouthTrust Bank and make donations to the the 'Mencer Children Fund.'"
