April 29, 2004 -- On April 25, 2004, JSU student, William Christopher Cook received national recognition at the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) Awards Banquet in Washington, D.C. for his outstanding achievements as a fraternity man. Along with only six other men across the country, Chris was honored with the Award of Distinction for an Undergraduate Student. Chris is the first member of Kappa Alpha Order, nationally, to receive the award and the first Jacksonville State University student to ever reach this honor.

The NIC Award of Distinction was created to honor those fraternity men that go above and beyond the high ideals of fraternity life. Chris's achievements include Student Government President, President of Kappa Alpha Order, Secretary/Treasurer for the Interfraternity Council, Vice President of Order of Omega, and serving as the 2003 student representative on the Board of Trustees. Chris also worked as a Congressional Intern for Congressman Mike Rogers. Chris was the 2002 JSU Greek Man of the Year and the 2003 Mr. Jax State. In Chris's Philosophy of Leadership, he wrote, "In any given situation, I try to demonstrate character. My fraternity constantly urges me to strive for excellence in all areas, and I truly believe that is what everyone should be doing. How else are you supposed to lead someone if you cannot lead them in the way they should act?" The leadership Chris demonstrates in his everyday actions were commended through the NIC Award of Distinction.

The NIC has 64 member organizations with 5500 chapters located on 800 campuses in the United States and Canada with approximately 350,000 undergraduate members. The NIC serves to advocate the needs of its member fraternities through enrichment of the fraternity experience; advancement and growth of the fraternity community; and enhancement of the educational mission of the host institutions.
