JSU's Houston Cole Library Offering Classical Music Online

May 6, 2004 -- Jacksonville State University's Houston Cole Library is now offering patrons the award-winning classical music listening and educational service Classical Music Library, providing thousands of classical music tracks from EMI and other leading recording labels for listening and searching online.

According to JSU Librarian William Hubbard, the addition of Classical Music Library "is giving students and other library users an unparalleled resource for comparative listening, music assignments and research."

CML, the world's first streaming music service for libraries, offers an online catalog of legally licensed recordings from EMI, Hyperion, Vox, Vanguard and other leading classical music labels.  Patrons can browse, search and listen to the music, while perusing the extensive biographical and reference information.

At Cole Library, Classical Music Library is available to all users at library terminals in the sixth floor Music Listening Room, or from home computers by using their student ID and name for authentication.

According to Hubbard, the addition of Classical Music Library solves the problem of providing access to classical performances while staying within the bounds of the copyright law.  It also reduces the library's need to purchase individual works on compact disc, as most of the classical canon is included in the online service.  The library will continue to purchase specific performances on CD, if requested.

Users can expect to find such great recordings on Classical Music Library as Yehudi Menuhin conducting Tchaikowski and Elgar, Alfred Brendel performing the complete piano music of Beethoven and Helmuth Rilling in the complete Bach orchestral and choral works.  Comparative listening is made possible by the multiple recordings of many of the available works.

Classical International Inc. is a world leader in providing music services to libraries.  The company is backed by SilverPlatter Information founders, Bela Hatvany and Ron Rietdyk.  Operating since 2000, Classical is a privately owned company with offices in the US and Europe.  Its award-winning Classical Music Library is the world's first streaming classical music service for libraries that enables listening and learning at library and remote computers.
