Encore! Show Choir to Totally Rock the 1980s on Nov. 19

11/13/2015

JSU’s Encore! Show Choir is hopping in its wayback machine and setting the dial to the 1980s for its fall concert on Nov. 19, 7:30 p.m., at the Mason Hall Performance Center. Admission is free and open to the public.

Renee Baptiste, professor of music and Encore! director, said students selected the 1980s era of rock for the concert, with section leaders making song requests. For the second year in a row, Oxford High School’s show choir will join Encore! on stage.

“Above all, I hope the high school students gain a sense of shared music-making with the college students,” said Baptiste. “I also want them to experience the collegiate show choir experience in hopes they'll audition for Encore! in the future and thus make JSU their college destination.”

Holly Luke, director of the Oxford High School show choir, is a JSU alumna and former JSU Encore! member. She continues to stay involved with her alma mater.

“Ms. Luke has contributed greatly to the music department since her graduation,” Baptiste said. “She's led audition choreography sessions in years past. She has served as cooperating teacher, a mentoring and training position, for several music education practicum and intern students. This semester she's again serving in that role with Lacy Taylor who is also a former Encore! member. Tradition continues!”

This is an event that won’t disappoint. “Audiences should expect to see a high energy show,” stated Baptiste. “Fast-paced rhythms with accompanying moves will be showcased.”

The event will kick off with Starship’s 1985 hit “We Built This City.” Come let Encore! rock your world as you roll back in time down memory lane!
