JSU's Houston Cole Library Instruction

Learning to use the library is an essential life-long learning tool. Both information technologies and library literacy will continue to play a dominant role in the educational, career, and world experiences of our students. We look forward to serving our students and providing them with this knowledge.

Faculty - If you have a class you would like to bring to the library for basic orientation or more subject specific instruction, please notify your Library Liaison or John Graham's office as soon as possible. If you prefer, you may fill out a Library Instruction Request form online at: www.jsu.edu/depart/library/graphic/biform.htm.

Security System Helps ID Thief

In the early morning hours of June 4, 2004, a person entered the JSU International House and took a 52” Sony Plasma Screen Television valued at $7200.00. Within hours of a burglary, university police officers had identified and arrested the perpetrator and recovered the stolen television. The crime was reported to the University Police at 9:30 a.m. on June 4, 2004. Officers met with Dr. John Ketterer who provided officers with access to their newly installed Digital Video Recording System. The security system pictures showed the male suspect entering the International House and then leaving with the television. The pictures were e-mailed and printed from the digital security system and a positive ID was made a few minutes thereafter. The suspect was identified and apprehended within 6 hours of the incident being reported to the police. The security system was key in the rapid identification and arrest of the thief. With this one incident, the digital security system paid for itself.

If any building managers are interested on campus, I would be happy to show them the demo digital video recorder that we have installed at Salls House. We are currently testing and evaluating the March Networks 4310. The March Network 4310 will support 16 cameras, motion detection, alarm interface, and much more. JSU Alumni Fun Day at Stone Mountain Park June 12

Attention JSU Alumni!

For JSU Alumni Fun Day at Stone Mountain Park, Saturday, June 12th at noon!

Join us under the white JSU tents in the park near the Triangle, Twin Oaks, and Railroad pavilions for a bring-your-own picnic lunch (sodas & snacks will be provided). We will gather at noon, but the tents will be set up throughout the day. There will be horseshoes and other games. Doorprizes will be given away.

Parking at the park is $7.00 per car, cash only. Also, we are offering group rate tickets ($16 per adult, $13 per child) that allow you to enjoy all of the park's attractions for the entire day, but you MUST RSVP!! We will only order tickets for those who have reserved them! Pick up tickets at the tent anytime after 11:00 a.m. Stay until dark and watch the laser light show!

Inventory Items Available for Campus Use

The following items have been inventoried and are available now to be relocated for use by JSU departments and offices on campus.

• 3 computer desks
• 3 rectangular tables (not large)
• 1 round table (4-foot diameter, blonde)
• 1 glass display case - glass both ends and front, 20 inches deep, 6 feet long, 3 feet high & lighted
• 1 10-foot conference table has been reassigned/relocated - no longer available

Drama Dept. 2003-2004 Season Finale

JSU Drama presents the final performance of the 2003-2004 theatre season, "THE VENETIAN WAY," written by an anonymous playwright about 30 years before Shakespeare was born, which has been translated by Carolyn Feleppa Balducci. This highly unusual, surprisingly modern play is about Iulius (Julius), a young scoundrel from Milan, who has come to Venice in search of a bride. He sets his sights on a beautiful young woman, Valiera, who just happens to be married, but who is quite eager for an erotic tryst. However, Anzola (Angela), an older widow, sets her sights on Julius. As the prologue tells us, "Everyone, I ask you, pay attention, and above all, don't be upset if our uninhibited actors flaunt some things in public that we might prefer to pass over in silence. You see, in trying to master the Lessons of Love, it is necessary to observe all its distinct effects." In other words, this play may not be for all ages as it contains adult situations. The production runs June 17, 18, and 19 at 7 p.m. and June 20 at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $6.00 for adults, $5.00 for senior citizens and JSU personnel, and $4.00 for students and military. PSC Dept. Schedules New Course for Summer II

The Department of Political Science and Public Administration (PSC) is offering Introduction to American Government (PSC 100) during Summer II. The class meets Monday through Friday from 9:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. during July. This is a survey course; no prerequisite required. All students are welcome regardless of major. Content includes structure and organization of the American national government, development of the U.S. Constitution and federal system, voting and elections, Congress the Presidency, and the federal courts. HPER Dept. Offers Concepts of Wellness Course in Marathon H

The Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) is offering Concepts of Wellness (PE 109) during Marathon H. This 6-week course will be offered Monday - Thursday from 9:30 - 11:45 a.m. from June 16 to July 27 in room 328 Pete Mathews Coliseum. Schedule for Graduate Orientation Summer Sessions

Graduate orientation sessions for first-time entering graduate students for the summer terms have been scheduled. Graduate students may select one of the following sessions: 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 1, 2004, 1103 B & C Library, or 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 29, 2004, 1103 B & C Library. The purpose of the orientation session, which will last approximately 40 minutes, is to acquaint graduate students with regulations, policies, and procedures of the graduate programs. Legislature Concludes 2004 Regular Session — What is Next?

The Alabama Legislature has concluded its work on the 2004 Regular Session and the Higher Education Partnership congratulates the leaders for passing the budgets.  Finding sufficient dollars to pass the General Fund and Education Trust Fund Budgets was significant.  However, the limited amount of available revenue means that the education budget only provides enough funding to allow most of the state’s K–Ph.D. programs to maintain status quo. Summer Student Employment Opportunities

The National Park Service is currently seeking applicants for summer employment at the Little River Canyon National Preserve, home of Jacksonville State University's Little River Canyon Field School. The positions of fee collector and maintenance worker are open to qualified university students who have been enrolled during Spring Term and are registered to be enrolled in the upcoming Fall Term. Both are full time positions and pay $10 per hour. Applicants must be US citizens. These positions are excellent, entry level opportunities for National Park Service employment. Find Cheapest Gas Prices in Jacksonville, Nationwide

The following is intended to help students and employees find the lowest gasoline prices. Since gasoline prices change frequently and may vary by as much as 20 percent within only a few blocks, it is important to be able to locate the service station with the lowest priced fuel. Alabama Gas Prices web site allows consumers to both share information about low priced fuel with others as well as target the lowest priced stations to save at the pumps. After registering as a member (a free service), you can enter the members area and search for the lowest prices in your vicinity. You can also report the price of gasoline in your area in order to help others find the best deals. (From Al Harris)

Field School Offers Native American Pottery Workshop

Prehistoric pottery expert Tammy Beane will lead a Little River Canyon Field School workshop on how to make clay pinch pots like those made on Lookout Mountain thousands of years ago. The workshop will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 17 at the DeSoto State Park picnic pavilion. The fee is $10 per person. The Field School will provide participants the clay as well as bone needles and paddles to make designs on their pots. A handout will be provided on the firing techniques discussed in the workshop. Workshop: Starting and Managing An Effective Small Business

The Jacksonville State University Small Business Development Center will present a workshop entitled "Starting and Managing an Effective Small Business" from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 9 at the Best Western Hotel and Conference Center in Oxford at the intersection of U.S. Highways 21 and 78. The workshop is for prospective and existing small business owners. Topics to be addressed include financing options available through local lenders, financial assistance programs from the United States Small Business Administration (SBA), recordkeeping and tax considerations, and the importance and availability of small business insurance coverage. SGA Involvement Meeting Sept. 15th

Attention all Students who want to be involved. SGA Involvement Meeting is to be held at 6:00 p.m., September 15th in the TMB 3rd Floor Auditorium. The SGA Involvement Meeting is for all students who want to become actively involved in the SGA. This meeting will describe all of the committees that students can get involved with and will give the students a chance to see what's available for them. Annual Faculty Awards Presentation

The annual Faculty Recognition reception was held May 17 in the Houston Cole Library. Ms. Donna Hey, Department of Health, PE & Recreation, received the Earlon & Betty McWhorter Outstanding Teacher Award. Dr. Kelly Gregg, Department of Physical and Earth Sciences, received the Cleo and Carla Thomas Award for Outstanding Community Education & Service.
