Congressman Bud Cramer Joins
Board of Trustees

U.S. Rep. Bud Cramer has been appointed to a seat on the Jacksonville State University Board of Trustees as a representative of the Fifth U. S. Congressional District, replacing Mr. James D. Thornton of Huntsville, who served on the board for 38 years before his retirement. Congressman Cramer has served as the representative for the fifth district since 1991. Cramer said Thursday afternoon, "I am honored that Governor Riley appointed me to the Jacksonville State University Board of Trustees. I strongly believe in the importance of higher education, and for over 120 years Jacksonville State has been one of Alabama's finest institutions." JSU President Bill Meehan said, "We are excited to have Congressman Cramer on the board representing the Fifth Congressional District. He brings a tremendous amount of expertise, and most of all he is personally very interested in joining the Board. Pinhoti Trail Hike: Dugger Mountain

Dugger Mountain is one of Alabama's highest and most beautiful places. Take a hike with Keith Hudson of the Anniston Outdoor Association, Renee Morrison, JSU's Field School coordinator, and Jason Shelton, a JSU botanist, at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 17 amidst giant hardwoods, steep mountainsides, and tranquil, crystal-clear streams. Hikers should bring a daypack with food and water. Sturdy footwear and proper clothing are recommended. Pre-registration is required. ROTC to Host 'Army of One' NASCAR Chevrolet April 13

In anticipation of Talladega Race Week, the JSU ROTC will host the Army of One NASCAR Chevrolet in front of Theron Montgomery Building on Tuesday, April 13 from 10 a.m. to 2p.m. JSU students, faculty, and staff will have the opportunity to view the car up close, sit inside, take pictures and ask questions of an Army of One crew member. The Gamecock Battalion will also have a 30-foot climbing wall located with the car for those who are looking for a physical challenge. Wild Bill and the Zoo Crew from Z-93 Classic Rock will be on hand to provide music and entertainment. For more information contact Captain Shackelford or call 782-8023.

An Evening of Poetry April 13

The English Department Lecture Series will present an event in celebration of National Poetry Month: "An Evening of Poetry." The event will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13 on the 11th floor of Houston Cole Library. Students will read from their own works written this semester. This event is free and open to the public.

Chamber Winds, Jazz Concert April 16

The JSU Chamber Winds and the JSU Jazz Ensemble will combine efforts beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 16 for their final concert of the semester. The event will be held in the Performance Center of Mason Hall. Both groups will feature internationally-known percussionist Steven Houghton as a guest performer. The JSU Chamber Winds are under the direction of Kenneth G. Bodiford, director of bands. The JSU Jazz Ensembel is under the direction of Dr. Chip Crotts, director of jazz studies. Admission is free.

Easter Egg Hunt April 9

Tutoring Services joins with Alpha Phi Sigma (the Criminal Justice honor society) to host an Easter egg hunt for children 12 and under. All Jacksonville State University faculty, staff, and students with children in this age range are invited to participate in the event, which will be held at 4:30 p.m. Fri., April 9 on the Quad. Admission is free.

Call for Nominations for Alumni Awards

The JSU Alumni Association is now taking nominations for the 2004 Alumni of the Year Awards, including the Outstanding Faculty Award. Please visit the alumni web page at www.jsu.edu/alumni to fill out a nomination form. All nominations must be turned in to the alumni affairs office no later than June 1.

Faculty & Staff: Register Now for Blackboard Workshop

The Office of Distance Education is offering an intermediate Blackboard™ training workshop on Monday, April 12 from 1 to 4:30 p.m., for faculty and staff at JSU. The workshop is intended to provide additional skills for using the Blackboard™ e-learning software for online or supplemental courses and is intended for individuals who have preliminary knowledge of the Blackboard™ system. Topics for this workshop include: mastering advanced content addition (learning units, media files, offline content, html files) and item/student tracking; tool management; course menu modification, including adding new content areas specific to the course; gradebook setup, including automated and manual entry of assignments and tests; asynchronous communication/file exchange tools (digital dropbox, assignment management, discussion boards). There is no fee for this workshop, and it is open to faculty and staff who may be interested in using Blackboard™ or who need a refresher with any of the topics described above. Further information about this workshop will be provided upon registration. Dr. Zettili to Deliver Faculty Lecture April 20

Professor Nouredine Zettili of the Department of Physical and Earth Sciences will present this year's Faculty Scholar Lecture beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20 in 1103-A Houston Cole Library. The public is invited. Dr. Zettili's address is titled, "Sweetest Thematic Melody of Physics?" Dr. Zettili is the recipient of Jacksonville State University's Distinguished Research Award.

Make Reservations Now for Calhoun County Alumni Dinner on May 6

The Calhoun County chapter of JSU's National Alumni Association will be hosting an alumni dinner at the International House on May 6th at 6:00 p.m. All JSU alumni who reside in Calhoun County are invited to attend. The dinner will be catered by Alexander's The Great Events and will cost $15.00. Dr. Kelly Gregg will be the evening's guest speaker on the topic of the Cherokee Trail of Tears. For Students: Federal Employment Workshop April 14

Career Placement Services will host a federal employment application workshop on Wednesday, April 14th, by appointment. Timothy Grey, the director of personnel and training at the Redstone Arsenal, will be leading the sessions in the TMB computer lab. In addition to providing students with valuable information about the benefits of federal employment, Mr. Grey will assist students who wish to submit an application on-line. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions as they access the computers and complete the application process with step-by-step instruction. Attendance of these workshops will be by appointment only. There is space for 20 students per session. Contact the placement office to reserve a time. Students should bring copies of their resume.

The Jacksonville State University Board of Trustees will meet at 10 a.m. on Mon., April 19 on the 11th Floor of Cole Library.

Scholastic Book Fair Continues Through April 9

The Learning Resource Center is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair offering books and other educational materials through April 9 beginning at 8 a.m. in 102 Ramona Wood Building. Purchases will enable the LRC to increase its holdings.


Edible Plants Workshop Is April 10

Northeast Alabama's natural cuisine of spring is the topic of a Little River Canyon Field School workshop beginning at 9 a.m. on April 10 at DeSoto State Park. Botanist Francine Hutchinson will teach how to identify, collect, and prepare many edible plants, such as the blackberry plant at left. The morning session will involve ethical, legal, and sustainable collecting, and the afternoon session will focus on preparation. Participants should bring lunch and be prepared for light hiking. Preregistration is required. The workshop fee is $20.00 per person. To sign up or ask questions, contact Renee Morrison at Ext. 5697.

Phi Beta Kappa Speaker April 13

Dr. Harvey E. Klehr, the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Politics and History at Emory University, will speak at Jacksonville State University on Tuesday, April 13th, at 7:30 p.m. on the 11th Floor of Houston Cole Library during the public portion of the Gamma of Alabama Phi Beta Kappa Graduate Association's annual meeting. Towards Zero Begins April 15

The Jacksonville State University Drama Department and the honorary drama fraternity Alpha Psi Omega will present Towards Zero, by playwrights Gerald Verne and Agatha Christie, Thurs., April 15 through Sun., April 18. The play is directed by drama senior Chris West. The event raises funds each year for scholarships. The play is a mystery about Lady Tressilian, who is giving a party at her home on the coast of Cornwall. She invites Kay and Neville Strange; Audrey, Neville's ex-wife; and Mary Aldin, Lady Tressilian's secretary. Come see who gets murdered and who did it. Curtain times are 7 p.m. and on Sundays at 2 p.m. Box office hours are from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Mon. through Fri. Call 782-5648 for other information.

Professional Connection Career Day Canceled; Replaced With Interviews

The "Professional Connection" career day event scheduled for April 15 has been canceled. In place of this event, Career Placement Services will be scheduling companies and recruiters for on-campus interviews. By hosting these individual events, students will have the opportunity to meet with recruiters for interviews on an individual basis. A schedule of interview days will be posted on the Career Placement Services website and will be announced on the JSU News Wire. Contact information for companies with vacant positions will be available in the Career Placement Office, 105 Bibb Graves Hall.

Registrations are being accepted through Fri., April 9 for the health fair which will offer numerous free screening tests and will be sponsored by the Office of Human Resources April 13 and 14. Fun Day on Quad & Student Appreciation Day April 15

The Department of Multicultural Services will host Student Appreciation and Fun Day on the Quad on Mon., April 15 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The JSU community is invited to come out for free food (hot-dogs, hamburger, chicken, fish, ribs, beans, and mac and cheese) and games (3 points shoot-out, volleyball tourney, ROTC Victory Wall and much more). Franz Joseph Haydn Concert Tues.,
April 13

The Jacksonville State University/Community Orchestra will present a free concert featuring the music of Franz Joseph Haydn at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13 in the Performance Center of Mason Hall. The concert will include Haydn's Toy Symphony and Symphony No. 82, "The Bear." The program will also include the winner of this year's JSUCO Concerto Competition, Jeremy Benson, performing Haydn's Concerto For Flute and Orchestra in D Major. Two One-Act Operas to be Performed

After more the 15 years of the absence of opera in Jacksonville, the David L. Walters Department of Music will present two one-act operas May 27 to May 28 at 7 each evening in Stone Center Theater. The operas are Signor Deluso and Down in the Valley. Down in the Valley is written by Kurt Weill, a German-born American composer who was instrumental in melding opera and musical theater. The opera is about a young girl who is in love with a man who has been sentenced to death in a Birmingham jail for murdering a man. A series of flashbacks portray their love for each other and how the murder happened. Signor Deluso is a comedy of misconceptions composed by Thomas Pasatieri, the orchestrator for Finding Nemo. Celie is in love with a young man, Leon, but her father will not allow it. Deluso's wife believes he is having an affair with Celie. Deluso believes his wife is carrying on with Leon, who believes that Deluso is married to Celie. When the confusion finally reaches the boiling point, the pleasantly plump maid enters the fray to straighten everything out. For more information contact Dr. Nathan Wight at 782-5876.
