March 5, 2004 -- There are so many Jacksonville State University student artists with outstanding work in this year’s BA & BFA Senior Show that the show has been split into two exhibitions. On Tuesday, March 30, the first show will begin from 7-9 p.m. with an opening reception. The display ends on April 9. The second show begins April 13 with opening reception taking place also between 7-9 p.m.  It ends on April 29.

Various media of student works will be displayed, such as graphic arts, painting, photography, and ceramics.

A call for entries has been issued for the twenty-fifth annual Mini-Works on Paper Exhibition. Deadline is April 12. The event has earned a national reputation.  More than $1,000 in prize money is available. Three entries per artist may be submitted for $15. Each entry must be no larger than a dollar bill and no smaller than one-half a dollar bill. See below for more details.

Opening reception will be on May 4 from 7-9 p.m. The exhibit will end May 26.

“I have people calling me from all over asking about the Mini-Works show,” said the Art Department’s administrative assistant, Jane Greene. “It’s well advertised throughout the nation. The display is a large one and is always very interesting.”

Juror for the Mini-Works show will be artist Bob Shelton. His work is in the collections of the American Embassy in Berlin, American Express in Atlanta, First Union of Charlotte and public collections in New York and Boston. He is a Memphis, TN, native and holds a BFA from Memphis State University and an MFA from the University of Alabama. He is Head of the Department of Art at Birmingham Southern College, where he has taught since 1968.

Top prize in the Mini-Works show will be $300 given to Best of Show.

Mailed entries must arrive at JSU by April 12. Include the entry fee, notification card, a self-addressed, stamped envelope and a self-addressed stamped package for the return of work. Entries must be matted, firmly backed, and wrapped with either clear acetate or Plexiglas. Works will be returned in June. Call 256-782-5626 or email jgreene@jsu.edu.
