Capital Campaign Office Established

Jacksonville State University has established a Capital Campaign Office to coordinate the soon-to-be-announced effort to raise funds for several important goals, including new construction projects, endowed faculty positions, and scholarship programs. LeAnn Al Meshal, director of the campaign, is assisted by Paige Faulkner. Both are employed by J.F. Smith Group, Inc. of Auburn. The Smith Group is serving as consultants to the Division of Institutional Advancement, which is spearheading the campaign. MORE >>>

Alumni To Speak During Communication Week

Jacksonville State University's Department of Communication will observe Communication Week April 5 through 8 with experts from key news media from throughout northeast Alabama speaking to students each day in Self Hall. The theme is "Bringing the Story Home: Localization of International News." Three of the speakers are JSU alumni -- Roy Williams, Elizabeth Chandler and Lantz Croft. MORE >>>

Walt Disney World To Recruit On Campus

A Walt Disney World (WDW) representative will be on campus recruiting for the WDW College Program at 4 p.m. on Wed., April 7 in 212 Stephenson Hall. The program offers a one-of-a-kind experience that provides students with the tools, education and opportunity to grow both professionally and personally. WDW will give a presentation about the program and offer a question-and-answer session. Representatives will interview students immediately afterwards. SMART Technology Workshop

Lindsey Grant of Daniel Communication will conduct a workshop for faculty on SMART technology and SMART boards in Ramona Wood Multimedia Instructional Laboratory at 1:30 p.m. on April 6. For further information contact Mr. Mike Zenanko.

Faculty Appreciation Barbecue April 5th

A faculty appreciation barbecue will be held on Monday, April 5th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the Quad on Monday, April 5th. The event is open to all JSU faculty.

Scholastic Book Fair Continues Through April 9

The Learning Resource Center is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair offering books and other educational materials through April 9 beginning at 8 a.m. in 102 Ramona Wood Building. Purchases will enable the LRC to increase its holdings.

Civic Chorale to Perform April 6


Wight and Schneider
The Calhoun County Civic Chorale will present Théodore Dubois' cantata, The Seven Last Words of Christ, at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6 at the Church of St. Michael and All Angels in Anniston. Admission is free. The Chorale will also perform Ralph Vaughan Williams' Five Mystical Songs, featuring Dr. Nathan Wight, new voice professor at Jacksonville State University. Edible Plants Workshop Is April 10

Northeast Alabama's natural cuisine of spring is the topic of a Little River Canyon Field School workshop beginning at 9 a.m. on April 10 at DeSoto State Park. Botanist Francine Hutchinson will teach how to identify, collect, and prepare many edible plants, such as the blackberry plant at left. The morning session will involve ethical, legal, and sustainable collecting, and the afternoon session will focus on preparation. Participants should bring lunch and be prepared for light hiking. Phi Beta Kappa Speaker April 13

Dr. Harvey E. Klehr, the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Politics and History at Emory University, will speak at Jacksonville State University on Tuesday, April 13th, at 7:30 p.m. on the 11th Floor of Houston Cole Library during the public portion of the Gamma of Alabama Phi Beta Kappa Graduate Association's annual meeting. Towards Zero Begins April 15

The Jacksonville State University Drama Department and the honorary drama fraternity Alpha Psi Omega will present Towards Zero, by playwrights Gerald Verne and Agatha Christie, Thurs., April 15 through Sun., April 18. The play is directed by drama senior Chris West. The event raises funds each year for scholarships. The play is a mystery about Lady Tressilian, who is giving a party at her home on the coast of Cornwall. She invites Kay and Neville Strange; Audrey, Neville's ex-wife; and Mary Aldin, Lady Tressilian's secretary. Come see who gets murdered and who did it. Curtain times are 7 p.m. and on Sundays at 2 p.m. Box office hours are from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Mon. through Fri. Call 782-5648 for other information.

Senior Sendoff April 8

The Alumni Association will hold a Senior Sendoff for JSU's graduating seniors from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thurs., April 8 at the Alumni House. Pizza and other refreshments are free but seniors must RSVP by Tuesday, April 6th at 782-5404.

Professional Connection Career Day Scheduled April 15

Career Placement Services will be hosting several events for Professional Connection Career Day on April 15th in Theron Montgomery Building Auditorium. A panel of successful alumni will kick off the day by answering students' questions and sharing tips for success. At 10 a.m. the fair will open and students will have the opportunity to meet with recruiters and hand out resumes. MORE >>>

A health fair offering numerous free screening tests will be sponsored by Human Resources April 13 and 14. JSU Gospel Choir Concert April 4

The Jacksonville State University Gospel Choir will perform in concert at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 4 in Leone Cole Auditorium on campus. Admission is $5 for adults, $2.50 for children. Special guests will be the Birmingham Community Choir, Hands Alive and Mother-To-Daughter. This is a Gospel Music concert with both traditional and contemporary music. 'Male Auction' Set for Women's History Month

The African American Association and the Office of Multicultural Services will sponsor a Male Auction on Thurs., April 1 in recognition of Women's History Month . Fun Day on Quad and Student Appreciation Day April 15

The Department of Multicultural Services will host Student Appreciation and Fun Day on the Quad on Mon., April 15 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The JSU community is invited to come out for free food (hot-dogs, hamburger, chicken, fish, ribs, beans, and mac and cheese) and games (3 points shoot-out, volleyball tourney, ROTC Victory Wall and much more). Franz Joseph Haydn Concert Tues.,
April 13

The Jacksonville State University/Community Orchestra will present a free concert featuring the music of Franz Joseph Haydn at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13 in the Performance Center of Mason Hall. The concert will include Haydn's Toy Symphony and Symphony No. 82, "The Bear." The program will also include the winner of this year's JSUCO Concerto Competition, Jeremy Benson, performing Haydn's Concerto For Flute and Orchestra in D Major. Disaster Institute Training Program
April 2 - 3

Jacksonville State University's Institute for Emergency Preparedness and the JSU Disaster Team are sponsoring the second annual Disaster Training Institute on campus April 2 through 3. The training, provided free by the American Red Cross, will give participants the fundamentals of how to provide mass care or family services, how to conduct damage assessments, and how to manage logistics in a disaster. This year's event also features two new training courses, "Public Affairs in Disaster" and "Weapons of Mass Destruction." The institute is open to all JSU students, faculty, and staff on a first-come, first-served basis. Register early to reserve your place. Drama Dept. Hosts Season's End Party
April 3

Alpha Psi Omega, an honor fraternity for drama students, will hold an end-of-the-year celebration for the drama department beginning at 6 p.m. April 3 at Remington Hall (formerly the Officer's Club at McClellan). The admission charge, in advance: $18/person, $35/couple; at door: $21/person, $40/couple. Finger food will be served beginning at 6 p.m., awards ceremony begins at 7, and festivities thereafter. Two One-Act Operas to be Performed

After more the 15 years of the absence of opera in Jacksonville, the David L. Walters Department of Music will present two one-act operas May 27 to May 28 at 7 each evening in Stone Center Theater. The operas are Signor Deluso and Down in the Valley. Down in the Valley is written by Kurt Weill, a German-born American composer who was instrumental in melding opera and musical theater. The opera is about a young girl who is in love with a man who has been sentenced to death in a Birmingham jail for murdering a man. A series of flashbacks portray their love for each other and how the murder happened. Signor Deluso is a comedy of misconceptions composed by Thomas Pasatieri, the orchestrator for Finding Nemo. Celie is in love with a young man, Leon, but her father will not allow it. Deluso's wife believes he is having an affair with Celie. Deluso believes his wife is carrying on with Leon, who believes that Deluso is married to Celie. When the confusion finally reaches the boiling point, the pleasantly plump maid enters the fray to straighten everything out. For more information contact Dr. Nathan Wight at 782-5876.


Two Student Exhibitions Slated

There are so many Jacksonville State University student artists with outstanding work in this year’s BA & BFA Senior Show that the show has been split into two exhibitions. On Tuesday, March 30, the first show will begin from 7-9 p.m. with an opening reception. The display ends on April 9. The second show begins April 13 with opening reception taking place also between 7-9 p.m. It ends at April 29. MORE >>>
