ever wanted to learn the secrets of safe paddling from the experts?
Jacksonville State University and Little River Canyon Field
School, in conjunction with The American Canoe Association,
is sponsoring a clinic, Essentials of River Safety Paddling.
The day of fun begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, August 27 at the Terrapin
Creek Outdoor Center.
is geared to teach the beginner/novice paddler the skills needed
for a safe trip in canoes or kayaks. Local paddling professionals
such as Fred Couch, ACA's Gordon Black, and JSU's Dr. Jimmy
Griffin have designed this hands-on and in-the-water workshop
to increase knowledge and safety on waterways.
stations will be created along Terrapin Creek with the help
of canoe clubs based in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee.
At the stations, participants will be taught safety, rescue
drills, and the basic "how to" of paddling.
Creek Outdoor Center, Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, and
JSU Field Schools are hosting this event. The event will will
be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and preregistration is required.
is $50 per person, which includes kayak rentals and equipment,
or $35 per person if a participant wants to use their own equipment.
A personal floatation device is required if you chose this option.
