Prominent JSU Trustee Member Gladys Carlisle Dies

Gladys Carlisle, a distinguished member of the Jacksonville State University Board of Trustees since 1984 and namesake for the newly dedicated Gladys M. Carlisle Fine Arts Facility on the JSU campus, has died less than a month since the dedication ceremony of this building held Monday, October 15, 2007. Mrs. Gladys Carlisle, age 66, of Tuscaloosa, AL died on Monday, November 5, 2007, at DCH Regional Medical Center.

At the time of her death, Carlisle was serving as a member of the Board but had announced her plans to leave at the expiration of her current term in January after 23 years of service.  A native of Tuscaloosa, she represented Alabama's 7th Congressional District on the Board.  As Trustee, Ms. Carlisle served on the Executive and Building Committees and as the Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee while faithfully attending Board meetings.

"She has demonstrated passion and great dedication to this University during her tenure as a Trustee," JSU President William Meehan said during a brief speech honoring Carlisle at the dedication ceremony.

Prior to her service as Board member, Ms. Carlisle taught in the Tuscaloosa high schools for 35 years.  As an educator, she has demonstrated passion and primary interest in promoting academic achievement, while being a champion of the educational needs for minority students.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 9,2007, 12 Noon at Bailey Tabernacle CME Church, 1117 23rd Avenue, Tuscaloosa, AL. Dr. W. C. Jones will officiate. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens with Rollins' Mortuary directing. She will lie in state at the church one hour prior to funeral time. The family requests donations be sent to the JSU Foundation in lieu of flowers.
