Department of Secondary Education Holds Senior Visitation Day

On October 12, 2007, the Department of Secondary Education welcomed 44 high school seniors from 10 surrounding schools interested in becoming professional educators at the 6-12 grade levels. The high school seniors were welcomed by Dr. Cynthia Harper, Dean of the College of Education & Professional Studies (CEPS); Dr. John Hammett, Associate Dean of the CEPS; and Dr. Jan Wilson, Head of Department, Secondary Education.

The students were given an overview of the teacher certification degree programs available in the Department of Secondary Education, admissions information to JSU and the Teacher Education Program, and contact information for academic advisement. Recruitment emphasis focused on areas of identified shortages in the state of Alabama such as mathematics, general science, and social science.

Current 6-12 secondary education candidates Jennifer Nix, Chad Hoffman, Jeana Gilbert, and Christopher Young spoke to the high school seniors about deciding to become a professional educator and their experiences in the JSU 6-12 certification programs. Current JSU graduate and mathematics teacher at Pleasant Valley Katy Jackson also spoke to the seniors.
