New HPER Minor in Coaching
Offers First Coaching Seminar Class

The first “Coaching Seminar” class offered in the new Minor in Coaching is offered in the fall semester. HPE 330, Seminar in Coaching Track and Field (CRN 3213, Section 001) will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11-12, beginning October 16 and ending on November 29. The class will be taught by JSU head track coach Steve Ray (see bio) and his staff.

This course introduces prospective track and field coaches to techniques, strategies, team management, motivation, conditioning, equipment selection/fitting, and scheduling. It offers an introduction into rules, organization, and administrative details relative to track and field. Grading for the course will be pass/fail. NOTE: Although the course does not start until October 16, normal registration deadlines and late fees apply.

Other courses offered in the fall semester are also required in the Coaching Minor. HPE 391, Methods and Principles of Coaching (CRN 612, Section 001) is offered Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m. The course will study various theories and techniques of coaching including both psychological and scientific aspects of athletic performance.

HPE 405, Scientific Principles of Conditioning (CRN 788, Section 001) is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:45 – 2:15 pm. The course will study the application of scientific principles to the training and conditioning of athletes. An emphasis will be directed to the study of strength, power, endurance, speed, ergogenic aids, and nutrition.
