Funeral Services for Dr. Virgil Benson Dec. 20

PELL CITY — Graveside service for Virgil Melvin Benson, 82, will be Wednesday, Dec. 20, at 2 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery with the Rev. Jennifer Riddle officiating. Virgil Melvin Benson was born in Dora, Alabama on Aug. 3, 1924, and departed this life on Dec. 17, 2006. He attended West Jefferson High School and the University of Alabama where he received his BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry. He served in the Army during WWII. He taught chemistry at the University level, Jacksonville State University, for 32 years.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jonathan Melvin Benson. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Helen Holcomb of Birmingham; three children, Suelen (David) Curtis, Edwin (Judith) Benson, and Marlene (Jim) O'Neill; three grandchildren, Jake Curtis, Conor O'Neill, Caitlin O'Neill; and many special nieces and nephews. Calling hours are Tuesday, Dec. 19, from 6-8 p.m. at First Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Baptist Childrens Home or Lakeside Hospice. Kilgroe Funeral Home in Pell City will direct the services.
