Vickery Hopes to Hold the Line for Gamecocks

JSU’s line of Vickery, Gergel, Jefferson, Devon May and freshman Jeff Jones — and later Tables — helped the Gamecocks produce a season-high 489 yards of offense. They put together three scoring drives of 11 plays or more and three of 68 yards or more, but on the down side, they had to settle for two second-quarter field goals after smoothly moving downfield into the red zone.

Vickery has moved into the starting rotation only recently and become quite valuable — because he can play both guard spots and center. The Gamecocks haven’t yet, but if they asked him to play tackle, a position he’s never played in his life, the 6-2, 285-pound sophomore said he’d give it his best shot.

“I just want to do what I can to help this team succeed,” Vickery said. “I hate that for Keith. I hate it, hate it, hate it. Now I’ll just try to step in and do what I can. I have confidence in myself. I have confidence in every situation.

“The transition hasn’t been that big a deal. In my position of being a fill-in guy, I pretty much prepare myself for both positions each week. When I come in here and watch film, I don’t do it for just one position. I just approach each week that on that bus ride something’s gonna happen and I’m going to be starting that week. You do so much all week long, there hasn’t been a time I stepped on that bus thinking I’m just going for the ride and the food.”
